AVOID THE HOME HAZARDS OF WINTER?

The winter season is approaching. The days become shorter and the temperatures are lower. No matter where you live, winter brings a change in the weather. To keep our homes cozy, we use alternative heat sources like fireplaces, portable space heaters, and wood burning stoves. But winter products such as hot water bottles, electric blankets and heaters can cause burns and other injuries. Keeping warm and safe during colder months of the year also means being alert to indoor health hazards. Here are simple tips should help to keep you safe at home this winter.

  1. Install smoke alarms throughout your home and test them monthly. Change the batteries every year, perhaps on a memorable date such as a birthday.
  2. Keep anything flammable at least three feet away from heating equipment, like the furnace, fireplace, wood stove, or a portable space heater.
  3. Have an escape plan in the event of a home fire and practice it regularly.
  4. If you have a fireplace in your home, make sure the chimney is clean and not blocked. Always place a screen in front of a fireplace when it’s being used, and never burn rubbish such as plastics or foam, wood that is painted.
  5. Don’t overload the fireplace with too many logs or an excessively large fire. This can cause damage to the chimney if it overheats. This also increases the chances of a log becoming dislodged from the pile and rolling out.
  6. Ensure the fire is extinguished before you leave your home or go to bed. Never leave a lit fireplace unattended, especially when children are present.
  7. Always keep children away from open heat sources such as fireplaces and gas stoves, and remember that even clothing with a ‘low fire danger’ label can still catch fire.
  8. Never use your gas oven or stove as a room heater.
  9. Never leave burning candles or any open flame unattended.
  10. Always use the right kind of fuel, specified by the manufacturer, for fuel burning space heaters.
  11. Check existing smoke alarms to ensure they work and are in the right places.
  12. Have your heating equipment inspected and cleaned by a qualified professional before each winter season.

Don't let fire hurt your home or you. Identify potential hazards and follow safety tips.

If your property does suffer fire damage, contact SERVPRO of Ventura at (805) 656-3911.

VENTURA RESIDENTS RALLY FOR FULL REOPENING CALIFORNIA

People on Rally VENTURA RESIDENTS RALLY FOR FULL REOPENING CALIFORNIA

The coronavirus pandemic that’s shattered lives throughout high-income countries is hitting the developing world as well. The outbreak has spread around the world; it has become more difficult to manage. Countries closed borders and implemented measures to lessen the spread of the virus from national quarantines to school closures. The new coronavirus can spread unnoticed so easily, many governments have felt the best way to ensure people have minimal contact with each other is to order total lockdowns, with people only being allowed to leave to get food or medicine, and to practice social distancing when they do leave their houses. But you may have noticed that some people have responded very differently to new rules on lockdown.

On May 1st in the afternoon, a large crowd gathered in the front lawn of the Ventura County Government Center.  More than 500 people took part in the event. The people protested the decision to shut down businesses and church services amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The participants dressed in red, white and blue as they circled the complex in vehicles creating a steady stream of honking their horns and waving signs with freedom.

Even though coronavirus has spread and there are more than 500 cases in the county, it’s disappointing to see hundreds of people disregarding safety protocol. There was no social distancing at the rally and no one was wearing masks. The participants exposed themselves to sickness.

The rally was peaceful. But the protesters were warned that for not following the safety guidelines they could face the potential for prosecution.

Under the statewide stay at home order, county leaders may not be able to reopen much until Governor Gavin Newsom returns control to the counties.

WHAT TO DO DURING LOCKDOWN?

Bored people WHAT TO DO DURING LOCKDOWN?

WHAT TO DO DURING LOCKDOWN/QUARANTINE?

Due to global pandemic, many of us are forced to stay at home. This is to lessen the spread of coronavirus. Schools and other workplaces began to close down. Remaining inside is a good way to protect ourselves from the virus but it could also lead to a boredom and stir craziness.

Here are tips to help make your time quarantined interesting and even productive.

  1. Keep Learning

Having classes cancelled doesn’t mean we should stop from learning. There are thousands of great resources online in all possible fields to keep us busy. There are online courses available no matter what our interest is. Now is the perfect opportunity to expand your knowledge and gain new skills.

  1. Declutter and donate

Staying at home gives us more time to carefully look around to our belongings. Identify clothes and other things that are rarely used and clean up some space. There are people to have them for sure. Sort them and donate.

  1. Family time

Not all of us are fortunate to be always with their families. You can use the internet to connect with your loved ones when we are not with them. Staying at home is a great opportunity to catch up with family members and get some closure.

  1. Cook

A lot of us often turn to takeaway food due to a busy lifestyle of lack of time for cooking. Now, it’s the right time to learn to cook and spoil ourselves with homemade dishes.

  1. Keep moving

Life in the time of coronavirus can be scary and stressful, whether you are in quarantine or not. To fight the boredom, it’s time to turn ourselves to the mood-boosting power of dance. Dancing helps us fight toxic feelings of fear, anxiety and paranoia.

  1. Reflect

Having time for ourselves is a great opportunity to reflect on our personalities, identify our strengths and weaknesses to work with.

This time of crisis reminds us that we should unite, cooperate and be compassionate above anything else to solve the problem easily. Helping each other should be our priority in this kind of situation.

Cooked Turkey SAFETY TIPS ON THANKSGIVING DAY

Holidays are fast approaching; many of us will be gathering and giving thanks with family and friends this
Thanksgiving Day. The holiday season is a busy time for all. As the winter months approach the risk of
fires increases. Kitchen is the most important place of the home, especially during the holidays.
Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires, more than two times as many home-cooking fires
occur than on any other typical day. Keep yourself and your family safe this Thanksgiving with these
safety tips.
1. Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a
short period of time, turn off the stove.
2. Check the stove regularly if you're simmering, roasting, boiling, or baking.
3. Remain at home while you are cooking, use a timer to remind you that you’re cooking.
4. Keep things that can catch on fire - like oven mitts, towels, paper or plastic - away from you stove top.
5. Avoid wearing loose-fitting clothes while in the kitchen.
6. Always have a lid that fits your pot or a flat pan to quickly smother out a fire.
7. Never use a glass casserole or lid on the stove or burner, as it may explode from the heat.
8. Missing or dead batteries are the main reasons smoke alarms do not sound in response to a fire.
9. In case of an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed to prevent flames from spreading.
10. After a fire your stove and oven should be checked or serviced before using again.
11. Keep children at least 3 feet away from a hot stove.
12. Keep matches and lighters out of reach of children.
13. Make sure you have working smoke alarms, test them by pushing the test button.
14. Keep a fire extinguisher handy in the kitchen, and know how to use it.
15. After the party, walk around the home and ensure candles and fireplaces are extinguished,
unnecessary appliances are turned off, and no potential hazards (leftovers, sharp/flammable objects)
are in reach of your kids or pets.
Thanksgiving is the peak day for home-cooking fires. Cooking equipment was the leading cause of home
fires and fire injuries. Always make sure your holiday is safe and happy.

WHAT TO DO BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER EARTHQUAKE?

7/10/2019 (Permalink)

WHAT TO DO BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER EARTHQUAKE? Ventura, California

Earthquake is the shaking of the Earth’s surface resulting from the sudden release of energy in the lithosphere that creates seismic waves. It  range in size from  weak that they cannot be felt to those violent enough to toss people around and destroy whole cities. When the epicenter of a large earthquake is located offshore, the seabed may be displaced and cause tsunami. Earthquakes can also trigger landslides, and volcanic activity. The energy of a magnitude 4 earthquake is 31 times the energy of a magnitude 3 earthquake. The energy of a magnitude 5 earthquake is 31 times the energy of a magnitude 4 earthquake.

Things to Do Before an Earthquake

  1. Make sure you have a fire extinguisher, first aid kit, a battery-powered radio, a flashlight, and extra batteries at home.
  2. Learn first aid.
  3. Learn how to turn off the gas, water, and electricity.
  4. Make up a plan of where to meet your family after an earthquake.
  5. Don't leave heavy objects on shelves (they'll fall during a quake).
  6. Anchor heavy furniture, cupboards, and appliances to the walls or floor.
  7. Learn the earthquake plan at your school or workplace.

Things to Do During an Earthquake

  1. Stay calm! If you're indoors, stay inside. If you're outside, stay outside.
  2. If you're indoors, stand against a wall near the center of the building, stand in a doorway, or crawl under heavy furniture (a desk or table). Stay away from windows and outside doors.
  3. If you're outdoors, stay in the open away from power lines or anything that might fall. Stay away from buildings (stuff might fall off the building or the building could fall on you).
  4. Don't use matches, candles, or any flame. Broken gas lines and fire don't mix.
  5. If you're in a car, stop the car and stay inside the car until the earthquake stops.
  6. Don't use elevators (they'll probably get stuck anyway).

Things to Do After an Earthquake

  1. Check yourself and others for injuries.
  2. Check water, gas, and electric lines for damage. Turn on the radio. Don't use the phone unless it's an emergency.
  3. Stay out of damaged buildings.
  4. Be careful around broken glass and debris. Wear boots or sturdy shoes to keep from cutting your feet.
  5. Be careful of chimneys (they may fall on you).
  6. Stay away from beaches. Tsunamis sometimes hit after the ground has stopped shaking.
  7. Stay away from damaged areas.
  8. If you're at school or work, follow the emergency plan or the instructions of the person in charge.
  9. Expect aftershocks.

It is important to think about what you will do to protect yourself, wherever you are, when the earth begins to shake.
