Why Your Ceiling Is Peeling and What to Do About It?

3/25/2024 (Permalink)

peeling ceiling from water damage Ceiling Is Peeling Water damage

Water damage can cause numerous issues in a home, and one of the most visible signs is peeling ceilings. Not only is this unsightly, but it can also indicate underlying structural problems that need immediate attention. In this comprehensive guide, we'll explore the common reasons behind peeling ceilings due to water damage and provide practical steps for restoring your ceiling to its former glory.

Common Causes of Peeling Ceilings:

  1. Moisture Infiltration: Whether it's a leaky roof, plumbing issues, or condensation buildup, moisture infiltration is often the primary cause of peeling ceilings. Water weakens the ceiling's structure, leading to paint or finishes peeling away.

  2. Loss of Adhesion: Water saturates the ceiling material, causing the paint or finishes to lose their bond with the surface. This results in bubbling and eventual peeling of the paint.

  3. Mold and Mildew Growth: Water-damaged ceilings create a conducive environment for mold and mildew growth. These microorganisms not only worsen the damage but also pose health risks to occupants.

  4. Expansion and Contraction: Fluctuations in temperature and humidity levels cause materials to expand and contract, exacerbating the peeling process.

Steps for Restoring Peeling Ceilings:

  1. Identify the Source: The first step is to identify and fix the source of water intrusion. This may involve inspecting the roof, plumbing, or improving ventilation in the affected area.

  2. Dry Out the Area: Thoroughly dry out the affected area to prevent further damage and mold growth. Use dehumidifiers, fans, or professional drying equipment for effective drying.

  3. Remove Damaged Material: In severe cases, it may be necessary to remove and replace the damaged ceiling material to ensure proper restoration.

  4. Professional Restoration: Entrust the restoration process to professionals like SERVPRO of Ventura. Our experienced technicians have the expertise and equipment to restore your ceiling safely and efficiently.

Peeling ceilings due to water damage are a serious issue that requires prompt attention. By understanding the causes and following the steps outlined in this guide, you can effectively restore your ceiling and prevent further damage to your home. Remember, when it comes to water damage restoration, SERVPRO of Ventura is here to help every step of the way.

How to Tell if Water Damage Is New or Old?

3/18/2024 (Permalink)

Water damage can wreak havoc on your property, causing significant structural issues and health hazards if left unaddressed. Whether it's from a burst pipe, leaky roof, or natural disaster, identifying water damage is crucial for timely remediation. One common challenge homeowners face is determining whether the damage is new or old. Knowing the difference can help prioritize repairs and prevent further deterioration. Here's how you can distinguish between new and old water damage.

  1. Moisture Content: New water damage typically exhibits higher moisture content compared to old damage. Use a moisture meter to assess the affected areas. Higher moisture levels suggest recent exposure to water, indicating new damage. Conversely, lower moisture levels may indicate that the damage occurred some time ago.

  2. Color and Texture: Pay attention to the color and texture of the affected materials. Fresh water damage often appears darker and more saturated, with a noticeable sheen. In contrast, old water damage may appear faded, discolored, or have a powdery texture due to mold or mildew growth over time.

  3. Odor: The smell of dampness or mustiness can indicate the presence of water damage. However, the intensity of the odor can vary depending on the age of the damage. New water damage tends to emit a stronger, more pungent odor, while old damage may have a milder or intermittent smell due to stagnant water or microbial growth.

  4. Visible Signs: Look for visible signs such as water stains, peeling paint, or bulging walls. Fresh water damage may cause paint to blister or peel relatively quickly, whereas old damage may have already caused significant structural deterioration, such as warped wood or crumbling drywall.

  5. Mold Growth: Mold thrives in damp environments and can develop within 24 to 48 hours of water exposure. Therefore, the presence of mold or mildew can indicate relatively recent water damage. However, extensive mold growth suggests that the damage has been present for an extended period.

Distinguishing between new and old water damage is essential for effective remediation and restoration efforts. By assessing factors such as moisture content, color and texture, odor, visible signs, and mold growth, homeowners can better understand the extent and timeline of the damage. If you suspect water damage in your home or business, contact SERVPRO of Ventura for professional inspection and restoration services. Don't wait until it's too late—swift action can minimize further damage and restore your property to its pre-damage condition.

The Consequences of Ignoring Water Damage: Why Timely Intervention Matters

2/5/2024 (Permalink)

Water damage can be a homeowner's worst nightmare, especially when caused by floods or heavy rain. Ignoring the aftermath of water intrusion can lead to a cascade of problems, affecting both property and health. In this blog post, we'll delve into the various consequences of neglecting water damage and emphasize the importance of timely intervention. At SERVPRO of Ventura, we understand the urgency of these situations and are here to help you mitigate the damage effectively.

Structural Deterioration Water can significantly compromise the structural integrity of buildings, causing lasting damage. Over time, wood can warp, metal can corrode, and concrete can weaken. Ignoring these issues can result in compromised structural stability, posing significant safety hazards for occupants.

Mold Growth One of the most pressing concerns after water damage is the rapid growth of mold. Damp conditions create an ideal environment for mold to thrive, spreading quickly and releasing spores into the air. Mold not only damages property but also poses serious health risks, especially to individuals with respiratory conditions.

Health Hazards Standing water and damp conditions foster the growth of harmful bacteria and microorganisms. Prolonged exposure can lead to a range of health problems, including respiratory issues, allergies, and skin irritation. Timely intervention is crucial to safeguard the well-being of those living or working in the affected space.

Electrical Risks Water and electricity do not mix well. Flooding can lead to electrical malfunctions, posing a significant risk of electric shock or fire. It's imperative to turn off the power in affected areas and enlist the help of professionals to assess and restore the electrical system safely.

Belongings Damage Water damage wreaks havoc on furniture, appliances, and personal belongings. Wooden furniture may warp, electronics may malfunction, and textiles may become breeding grounds for mold and unpleasant odors. Quick action is essential to salvage as much as possible.

Decreased Property Value The visible signs of water damage can significantly decrease the value of a property. Potential buyers are likely to be deterred by the prospect of dealing with the aftermath of neglected water damage. Timely restoration not only preserves the property's value but also ensures a safer and healthier living environment.

Ignoring water damage is a gamble that no homeowner should take. The consequences extend beyond visible property damage, affecting health, safety, and overall well-being. At SERVPRO of Ventura, we specialize in water damage restoration, providing prompt and efficient services to mitigate the impact of floods and rainwater. Don't wait until it's too late—contact us today for expert assistance in restoring your property and ensuring a clean, safe environment for you and your loved ones.

Navigating Water Damage Coverage: Does Homeowner’s Insurance Help?

10/9/2023 (Permalink)

Homeowners insurance Water Damage Coverage SERVPRO of Ventura

Unpredictable water damage can strike your home at any time due to various reasons, from bursting pipes to severe storms. When such disaster occurs, you might wonder, "Will my homeowner’s insurance cover this damage?" SERVPRO of Ventura is here to help you navigate through the waters of insurance coverage for water damage.

Understanding Homeowner’s Insurance Coverage

Most homeowner’s insurance policies provide coverage for water damage, provided the damage is sudden and accidental. For example, if a pipe bursts suddenly and floods your living room, your insurance is likely to cover the damages. It is crucial to understand the nuances of your policy, as coverage can vary significantly between different insurance providers and plans.

What’s Typically Covered

  1. Plumbing Issues: Insurance often covers water damage resulting from overflow of water from plumbing, heating, or air conditioning.

  2. Roof Leaks: Damages due to a leaky roof, usually covered if the leak wasn’t caused by negligence or lack of maintenance.

  3. Appliance Malfunctions: If home appliances like dishwashers or washing machines malfunction and cause water damage, your insurance may cover it.

What’s Not Covered

  1. Gradual Damage: Insurance does not cover water damage happening over time due to negligence or failure to maintain.

  2. Floods: For flood damage, you would typically need a separate flood insurance policy.

  3. Sewer Back-Ups: Special endorsements are often needed for damages caused by sewer or drain back-ups.

Taking Preventive Measures

To ensure you get the most out of your insurance:

  • Regularly inspect plumbing, roofing, and appliances for potential issues.
  • Maintain and repair any problems promptly to prevent gradual damage.
  • Understand and review your insurance policy, knowing what is and isn’t covered.
  • Consider additional policies or endorsements for comprehensive protection.

  • Gray Water: This is used water from appliances, sinks, or showers. It may contain contaminants and can lead to mold growth if not treated promptly.
  • Black Water: The most dangerous, it's sourced from sewage or serious flooding from rivers or streams. It contains unsanitary agents, harmful bacteria, and fungi. Extensive cleanup and disinfection are crucial.

2. Advanced Equipment and Technology: The tools used for water extraction, drying, and dehumidification are not your everyday household appliances. These machines are expensive to purchase, maintain, and operate.

6. Additional Services: Often, water damage is accompanied by mold growth if not addressed promptly. Mold remediation is a separate process requiring unique tools, products, and expertise. When such additional services are needed, costs can rise.

7. Detailed Documentation: For insurance purposes, thorough documentation of the damage and restoration process is essential. This requires time and diligence, ensuring homeowners and businesses have the necessary paperwork for potential claims.

While the cost of water damage restoration might seem high, it's essential to remember the value of what's at stake: your property's safety, health, and longevity. Water Damage in 2023: How It Impacts Your Property's Worth

8/11/2023 (Permalink)

realtor house realtor house

Water damage is an issue no property owner wants to confront. In the fluctuating real estate landscape of 2023, it has become more critical than ever to understand how such damage impacts your property’s value. Whether you are a seasoned investor, a homeowner, or are simply considering buying or selling, understanding the implications of water damage is essential. SERVPRO of Ventura sheds light on this pressing concern.

1. Immediate Decline in Market Value

Water damage, if not addressed promptly, can cause a considerable decrease in a property's market value. Even a minor leakage can lead to potential buyers or real estate agents offering or valuing your property at significantly lower prices. The stigmatization associated with water-damaged properties has grown in recent years, making it a focal point of property assessments.

2. Compromised Structural Integrity

Water can weaken the very foundations of your home. Prolonged exposure can lead to rotting wood, corroded metals, and the disintegration of other foundational materials. As the structure becomes compromised, the property's safety becomes a concern, further plummeting its market value.

3. Mold and Mildew Growth

One of the most common after-effects of water damage is the growth of mold and mildew. Not only do they have potential health implications, but their presence also signifies previous or ongoing water issues. Homes with mold problems can see a drastic decline in their market value, given the costs and complexities of mold remediation.

4. Aesthetic Degradation

Water stains on walls, ceilings, and floors are evident markers of water damage. These visual indicators can turn away potential buyers or lead to decreased rental income, as they diminish the property's aesthetic appeal.

5. Increased Insurance Premiums

Properties with a history of water damage often see a hike in their insurance premiums. This increase is a direct consequence of the perceived higher risk. Potential buyers, upon learning about the heightened insurance costs, might either negotiate for a reduced price or look elsewhere.

6. Electrical and Appliance Damage

Water damage can wreak havoc on a property's electrical systems and appliances, which can be costly to repair or replace. Modern homes, with their intricate network of smart devices and appliances, can particularly feel the brunt of this.

The Silver Lining

All is not lost if you find your property afflicted by water damage. With professional intervention and remediation, it is possible to salvage and even restore much of the lost value. SERVPRO of Ventura prides itself on its water damage restoration services, ensuring that your property is brought back to its former glory with minimal fuss.

In conclusion, the effects of water damage on property value in 2023 are significant, but with prompt attention and the right expertise, recovery is attainable. Can a House Collapse from Water Damage?

8/4/2023 (Permalink)

house in ventura california house in ventura california

At SERVPRO of Ventura, we believe that an informed homeowner is a prepared homeowner. Today we’re addressing a question that many customers have posed: Can a house collapse from water damage? While the short answer is yes, it's important to understand the sequence of events and types of damage that can lead to such a disastrous outcome.

Water damage, if not promptly and properly addressed, can have catastrophic impacts on the structural integrity of your house. To understand how, let's break down the different types of water damage and their potential for destruction.

How Does Water Damage a House?

Water damage can occur from both internal and external sources. Internal causes might include leaking pipes, water heater failures, and HVAC issues. External causes could range from heavy rain, flooding, or snowmelt.

Regardless of the source, water damage can affect your home in several ways:

1. Wood Rot

Wood, a common building material for most homes, can become weakened when exposed to excess water. The presence of moisture encourages the growth of fungi, which breaks down the cellulose and hemicellulose in the wood, causing it to decay and lose its structural integrity. This phenomenon is also known as wood rot.

2. Foundation Damage

Over time, water can erode the soil supporting your home's foundation. As the soil moves, it may cause the foundation to crack or shift. If the foundation is significantly compromised, it could lead to the collapse of the house.

3. Mold and Mildew

Mold and mildew thrive in damp environments and can damage various building materials. Apart from causing health issues, they can contribute to structural damage, especially if the infestation is left untreated.

How to Prevent Water Damage in Your House

Preventing water damage is a lot easier, less stressful, and less costly than dealing with a collapsed house. Here are some preventive measures:

1. Regular Home Inspection

Regularly inspect your house for any signs of water damage. Pay close attention to your roof, plumbing system, and foundation. A small leak today can turn into a significant problem tomorrow.

2. Proper Home Maintenance

Ensure your home is in good repair. Fix cracked or missing roof tiles, ensure windows and doors are sealed correctly, and check your plumbing systems regularly for any leaks.

3. Hire a Professional

Hire a professional water damage restoration company like SERVPRO of Ventura to inspect and restore your home if you suspect any water damage. It's important not to ignore any potential issues, no matter how minor they may seem.

Water damage is more than just an inconvenience; it can lead to devastating consequences if not addressed promptly. At SERVPRO of Ventura, we have the experience, equipment, and expertise to handle all types of water damage and help you avoid the nightmare of a house collapse.

4 AREAS OF YOUR HOME MOST SUSCEPTIBLE TO WATER DAMAGE

Mold can start growing within 24 hours following water damage from rainstorms. In some cases, water leaks are obvious. The damage they cause can be subtle or occur in an area of the home you don’t typically access. In that case, standing water can go unnoticed for weeks or even months at a time, gradually becoming more and more serious. The best way to prevent water damage is to detect and eliminate any moisture that enters your property. Below are areas of your home that are most vulnerable.

Bathroom

To protect your bathrooms from water damage, regularly check for signs of leaks, like discoloration on the walls or floors. Regularly de–clog your sink and shower drains. Call in the help of a professional to upgrade old fixtures and tiles that could potentially facilitate water damage.

Kitchen

The kitchen is another area of the home susceptible to water damage. Sinks can clog, leak, or overflow and large appliances connected to water supply lines are also at-risk. The refrigerator can leak for a number of reasons; if the defrost drain or a water supply line is clogged, for example, or if the ice maker malfunctions. The dishwasher can leak for a variety of reasons as well.

Basement

In your basement or crawlspace, checking for standing water following a storm is a must. Poor drainage can damage your property’s foundation if left unaddressed. This is another place where mold can grow thanks to the dark and damp conditions.

Laundry Room

As with bathrooms, kitchens, and even basements, there are multiple potential culprits for laundry room water damage – the washing machine is the most at risk.

A significant amount of water is used to wash clothes, washing machines might overflow during operation or a hose might spring a leak. You could face severe and costly damage if happens when you’re not at home.

water heater and furnace water heater and furnace

Broken pipes can lead to extensive losses, putting your business out of action for a while and causing costly damage to your property. One of the most serious types of damage resulting from a broken pipe is a furnace flood.

What Should You Do if you’ve got a flooded furnace?

Furnaces and water heaters are filled with many sensitive electrical components that can be damaged when exposed to water. If you experienced flooding in your basement, there’s a good chance that some parts of your HVAC system were submerged or experienced increased moisture in the air and as a result, could experience a machine malfunction or create a safety hazard.

If your basement was flooded, it’s extremely important to schedule a heating inspection by a professional HVAC technician. Just like water heaters, gas furnaces are susceptible to valve and control corrosion and electric furnaces have coils and fans that can be damaged. A qualified heating and cooling specialist will be able to assess the damage to your system and provide recommendations regarding furnace repair or total replacement.

If your furnace or water heater were damaged by flood water, make sure to contact your insurance agency to see what coverage they provide for repair or replacement and then schedule an inspection from specialist. The disaster that led to a furnace flood can leave you feeling overwhelmed. Working with a professional like SERVPRO of Ventura can reduce some of the strain concern. These experts can lead you through the recovery process and get your business back into action. Call us at (805) 656-3911.

PREPARE YOUR BUSINESS FOR HEAVY RAINS

3/13/2023 (Permalink)

Rains come at unexpected times, so it’s always necessary to protect your business against floodwater. Heavy rains can cause flooding, power outages, mold growth, and other serious problems, so it’s crucial to be proactive to avoid significant damage or disruption to the business. While it’s always a good idea to have a water remediation company in your area, on standby, here are a few things you can do on your own to protect your business.

TEMPORARY BARRIER

If you operate within an area that floods often, then you may want to have extra sandbags on hand in case of a strong storm. Pace sandbags around the vulnerable place like doorways and windows to create a makeshift barrier.

WEIGHT DOWN EXTERIOR FURNITURE

A flood can turn extreme elements into wrecking balls. Outdoor furniture that may seem heavy can float in high water levels and become scattering ram, breaking windows and causing severe damage. To prevent outdoor furniture from becoming hazardous, bring whatever furniture you can.

ELEVATE SENSITIVE EQUIPMENT

Instead of risking water damage to expensive electronics, make sure to raise all equipment above flood level. If your business has a second level, then moving all equipment upstairs is best.

BOARD VULNERABLE ENTRY POINTS

Consider boarding up the property to prevent serious damage to windows and doors.

WATER DAMAGE CONCRETE: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

3/10/2023 (Permalink)

wall water damage and mold wall water damage and mold

Water on your concrete floor might seem like a trivial matter, you might even dismiss the sight thinking it will dry and not cause a problem. However, you may be surprised to learn that water damaged concrete can be one of the most devastating problems a homeowner or business owner can face. Not only is it unsightly but it can also cause structural issues and mold growth if not addressed properly.

Concrete is a material that is used wide variety of places. It is relied as a strong and durable material. However, when concrete is put under tension, it can crack. Here are some of the common causes of damage to concrete.

SCALING

It occurs when water seeps into the concrete, freeze and then flakes off. Cement is porous material which makes it possible for the water to get into the concrete.

DRYING

When concrete is poured, there is moisture in it. As concrete dries, the moisture escapes which causes the mixture to shrink and crack.

CORROSION

In building structures, steel rebar is placed within the concrete to prevent rusting. However, if chloride is present, the steel can begin to rust. Rust stains appear on concrete due to deposits of iron and water.

Many homes are built on concrete foundations, and a combination of these things can lead to a dangerous living scenario. Homeowners should take preventive measures by ensuring their homes are waterproofed to prevent further water damage to concrete.

NEW vs. OLD WATER DAMAGE

Water Damage caused by a broken washing machine Water Damage caused by a broken washing machine

The most frequent form of property damage is caused by water and there are numerous ways it can occur. Nature, for one, can be the cause through sudden storms and flooding. A pipe burst is another common culprit, especially those sneaky slow leak. Sewage backups is the worst unmistakable type of water loss. Here are some ways to determine whether its new or old.

Tactile Cues

You can determine how old the damage is touching the water spot. New water damage will not have had time to weaken the dry wall, when still wet, it will still feel hard. Older water damage spots will feel squishy, you will be able to move it without much pressure or force.

Visual Cues

The age of water damage can be estimated the same way people figure out the age of mess, by the rings. Newer spots will be one dark spot, but older water damage spots will begin to develop rings. The older the spot, the more rings it will have.

Bacteria takes time to colonize, if you see mold, that means the water has been there for a few days. If you notice decay, this means that your house has been exposed to consistent standing water over a period of time.

If you need a water damage restoration service in your area, SERVPRO of Ventura is here to help. Call us at (805) – 656 – 3911.

A WATER DAMAGE WALL CAN BE DRIED AND RESTORED, RATHER THAN REPLACED

A plumbing leak or other water intrusion leaves you wet walls. Do wall have to removed and replaced?

A few inches of water infiltration along the floor can seep into the walls, leading to extensive water damage. Drying damp walls immediately is critical in order to avoid structural damage and mold growth. Property owners have option to dry out the walls themselves or call professional water damage restoration.

Traditional methods of restoration involved removing wet drywall material and replacing it. Today there is technology that allows SERVPRO of Ventura to save walls by drying them, which can significantly reduce restoration cost. They have an arsenal of instruments that enables them to make decisions based on facts, not history or habit and equipment and procedures to accomplish the task.

Factors to Consider and Steps Involved

When floodwater or sewage have entered the house – or when structural integrity has been compromised. IN most cases, saving a wall is possible when a skilled restorer such as SERVPRO of Ventura uses appropriate techniques.

A vapor barrier is effective in drying walls. It impedes the evaporation of moisture from walls or other materials. Removing the outer vapor barrier or perforating gloss paint expedited the drying process.

Drying can be accelerated by drilling small holes along the bottom of the walls and ventilating the small cavity, greatly reducing drying time. When drying is complete, holes are patched or covered by baseboard. The process described above is faster and less expensive than removing and replacing walls.

WATER DAMAGE VS FLOOD DAMAGE: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

8/1/2022 (Permalink)

water damage ventura california water damage ventura california

When people talk about water damage and flood damage, they think that these two are used interchangeably. What they not know is that water damage and flood damage are actually different from the other. This mistake is often realized by people too late when they try a water damage claim for flooding and find out that flooding is a different thing altogether.

What is the difference between water damage and flood damage?

It is actually easy to differentiate flood damage from water damage. Remember that when a home suffers from flood damage, it is usually one of many homes that suffer from the same problem. When your home suffers from water damage, your home is the only one that has such an issue.

  • Water damage is usually caused by plumbing, such as a backup from a toilet, a flooded air-conditioning unit, or an overflowed washing machine.
  • Flood damage is usually caused by water originating from a natural disaster hurricane, or heavy rain event. This can include flash – flooding, sump pump failure or prolonged roof leaks.

Does Homeowners Insurance cover flood damage?

Although the standard homeowner’s policy covers water damage, it does not cover flood damage, nor does it cover flooding related to heavy rains, hurricanes or storm. Since flood damage is not considered a type of water damage, it’s critical to take out a flood insurance policy that provides coverage for the flooding that often accompanies wet weather, especially if you live in a high risk flood zone.

The standard homeowner’s insurance policy will cover water damage if the owner could not prevent the damage, but this is where it can get a little dicey. Whether water damage is covered or not depends on a few things:

  • The source of the damage
  • The type of insurance policy
  • Whether the water damage is sudden and accidental or gradual

When your home is damaged by a burst pipe, toilet or sewage overflow, water heater leak or because of a storm, call SERVPRO of Ventura. We can take care of any and all restoration needs from water damage and flooding. Call us at (805)656-3911.

Are you a buyer or seller interested in getting a home inspection? A home inspection is one of the most important items on the home buying checklist. As a potential buyer, an inspection is a win-win. It is a great idea so you can be in tune with any potential issues that need to be addressed. From the foundation, to the roof or plumbing problems, to the heating and cooling systems, pest control, drainage issues, everything is looked over. Furthermore, having any issues documented puts pressure on the seller to fix major problems before the buyer ends up footing the bill. Below are some steps we recommend to maximize your inspection.

  1. Get a recommendation.
  • Your real estate professionals should be able to recommend a reliable and highly rated inspection company. Cheapest option may not always be the best option.
  1. Be present for the Inspection.
  • The Inspector wants you to point some things out to you and explain any notes he or she is making on the report. Don’t hesitate to ask questions. It is important you understand the functions of the systems in your home.
  1. Ask Questions.
  • Ask many questions as you want and make sure you feel comfortable with the answers. Who doesn’t dream to own a house? A house is the biggest investment most people will ever make in their lives, so it is important to understand what problems need to be addressed.
  1. Bring in Additional Specialty Professionals if needed.
  • There is nothing wrong with having someone else come in to look at a specific portion of the home, especially if they are an expert in their field. Some inspector does not look at the plumbing system or does not offer something specific like mold testing.

  1. Flood Watch
  • Is issued when conditions are favorable for flooding. It doesn’t mean flooding will occur, but you should be prepared. This has a higher likelihood of flooding than advisory.
  1. Flood Warning
  • Is issued when a hazardous weather event that may cause a flood is imminent or underway.
  1. Flash Flood Warning

CAUSES OF ROOF LEAKS DURING HEAVY RAINS

4/18/2022 (Permalink)

Roof Leak Water Damage Restoration Ventura

Because spring and early summer bring heavy rains, it is a cause for concern. The areas of your roof that are prone to pooling water can lead to a leak during a heavy rain. Keep an eye out for the following problem areas to avoid the need for buckets.

  1. Plumbing. If you have any vent caps ventilation exhaust fans on your roof, they may be source of your leak. Make sure your bath fan duct is insulated. A fan duct that is not properly insulated will moisten the air. This leads to condensation in the duct. Look out for moisture building in the bathroom walls or within the attic.
  2. Flat roofs. Some flat roofs lack the drainage required to keep up with heavy rainfall. If your roof lacks proper drainage, this is an excellent place to begin improvements.
  • Add gutters and downspouts so that roof water runoff drains away from the foundation.
  • Clean out debris from gutters and downspouts; repair or replace leaking/ damaged sections.
  1. Metal corrosion. Cracks in metal and corrosion around fasteners can create enough space for water to leak. Overtime, expansion and contraction can loosen the seams in a metal roof. This wear and tear may also lead to leaks.
  2. Degraded shingles. Roofing shingles will dry out and wear to the point that they can longer keep water out. Roof leaks that happen during heavy rains may indicate the end of the shingle’s life.

A roof leak can cause substantial damage in hard-to reach areas. Call the experts to evaluate the safety of your building before you attempt any repairs yourself. It is important to have everything dry and disinfected to prevent future problems.

Earth Tones home interior Water Damage Ventura California

Water damage continues even after the flood water is gone, unlike the kind of damage caused by wind or impact that’s why it has to be addressed as soon as possible. If your home is damaged by water, here are three factors that may impact the cost of damage repair.

  1. Square footage

It will take more time, materials and labor to fix a large space, compared to a small bedroom. Drying time is particular importance here, as bigger room will take longer to dehumidify.

  1. Type of Water

The type of water in your home can drastically affect the cost of repairs. For example, if the water in the area appears murky in color, this could indicate that the water is contaminated. Contaminated water is more difficult to clean due to potentially hazardous materials within the water, whereas water that is clear can cleaned with fewer safety precautions.

  1. Damaged Building Materials

Some materials require more restoration work than others. Water damaged hardwood floors are often easier and take much less time to repair compared to carpets. The cost of replacement materials, as well as whether restoration requires an exact match can also be a factor.

If your house has experienced flooding, it’s essential to seek out help from a company that specializes in water damage cleanup in order to get an accurate estimate of the cost and to identify long term solutions.

IS THERE ANY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WATER DAMAGE AND FLOOD DAMAGE?

11/12/2021 (Permalink)

Flooded house, family having problems Flooded house, family having problems

IS THERE ANY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WATER DAMAGE AND FLOOD DAMAGE?

Broken pipes, overflowing bathtubs, busted toilets, burst water main, damaged washing machine hoses and flash floods. There are many ways water can cause expensive damage to your home. When the damage happens, your first step is to determine whether you have a water insurance claim or a flood claim.

How does flood damage differ from other types of water damage?

Most insurance companies define flood water as water that has come from a rising and overflowing of a body of water onto dry land. The term “rising’’ is key here, covering water that comes from overflowing river or sea, for example but not from a leaky pipe or sink. Flood damage can only be caused by the following:

  • Overflow of inland or tidal waters
  • Rapid accumulate of surface waters from any source
  • Mudflow
  • Collapse of land along the shore of a lake or similar body of water as a result of erosion

Water damage is much broader and essentially covers every other instance of water ingress that does not involve rising water. It is usually caused by problems within the building itself such as a leaky roof or a broken washing machine. It is important to perform regular maintenance on your home or building to prevent water damage that could otherwise be easily avoided.

  • A pipe burst
  • A backroom sink overflows
  • Water intrusion from a leaking roof cause wood rot and mold

Anytime there’s a hurricane, storm, heavy rain or more, your insurance won’t cover it. You have to purchase an extra flood insurance plan for those instances.

Water damage is usually covered under homeowner’s insurance policy. Some water damage examples include severe rains that soak through your roof, a burst pipe, an overflowing toilet or a storm that breaks your windows and allows water inside.

Damage Signs

  • If you notice a bathroom leak, your plumber or water damage specialist may help you figure out that the source is the supply line. It is a good idea to replace the piping as soon as possible. A piece of plumbing that has a leak can lead a larger issue in the future.

With an inflatable bladder dam such as the aqua-barrier, the floodwater fills the bladder to form a wall. A fully inflated Aqua-barrier can hold back as much as 6 ft. of water and silt, protecting your property from any further damage.

  1. Transportable Fences

These fences create a barrier that surrounds your premises and blocks water from entering. You can position them where you want and setting them up does not require too much effort.

It only means that flood can come from natural resources or man-made sources. Buying property comes with a lot of administrative paper works and requirements. Federal Emergency Management Agency maintains official flood zone maps, which designate areas with the greatest risk of flooding. To find the designation of your home, go to FEMA’s Map Service Center and enter your address.

FEMA’ flood map falls into three main zone.

  1. High Risk zone

High risk flood areas begin with letter A or V on FEMA flood maps. These areas are risk of flooding. It also referred as 100-year floodplain. This zone experiences 1 percent catastrophic flood each year. If you are in high risk zone, flood insurance is usually required.

  1. Moderate to Low risk zone

Moderate to Low risk areas begin with letter B, C or X on FEMA flood maps. These areas are outside the 1 percent floodplain, so flood insurance is not required.

  1. Undetermined Risk Zone

HOW TO DETERMINE IF A HOME HAS WATER DAMAGE OR TERMITE DAMAGE?

HOW TO DETERMINE IF A HOME HAS WATER DAMAGE OR TERMITE DAMAGE?

Homeowners can easily confuse termite damage and water damage. Termites can create high – moisture nests and often similar to signs of water damage. We see two types of damage in our homes: termite damage and water damage, but the question is “how can you tell the difference between the two?”

Water damage and termite damage can exhibit characteristics that make it very difficult for the homeowner to discern the difference. Treatment and repairs for the two are very different. Chemicals used in the extermination of termites require special certifications, licensing and protective gear. When termite damage is involved in a water damage incident, SERVPRO of Ventura professionals can manage the entire project, including having a licensed and bonded exterminator mitigate the termite infestation and damage.

HOW TO TELL WATER DAMAGE FROM TERMITE DAMAGE?

WATER DAMAGE

Water damage to wood often creates square-shaped “cells” in the wood. This pattern can be called “cubicle rot” referring to cube-shaped square cells. It is also referred to as “alligatoring” because the square shaped cells resemble an alligator’s back. The wood expands and cracks with the increased water content.

TERMITE DAMAGE

Underground termites devour wood, they feed along the softer springwood, avoiding the harder summerwood. Inspection of a cross-section of a tree reveals lighter – colored rings, which are springwood, and darker – colored rings, which are summerwood.

Drywood termites consume wood along and across the grain. They carve out large cavities or galleries for their nests, and these galleries are connected by tunnels. They have smaller colonies, so cause less damage.

SERVPRO of Ventura provides water damage restoration services. Our tea, of professionals carry numerous certification and possess years of experience. They are skilled at identifying water damage. Some water damage is hidden between walls or under flooring and disguised as termite damage.

THE FOUR PRINCIPLES OF DRYING

12/21/2020 (Permalink)

Principle of Drying Water Damage Ventura, California Principle of Drying Water Damage

THE FOUR PRINCIPLES OF DRYING

When a water loss occurs, specific steps are taken during mitigation process. This is to ensure the affected space is completely dry. Every step completes another phase of the extraction process.

  1. Water extraction

This is the water removal phase. Removing water in its state is at least 500 times more efficient than skipping this step.  Being a flood victim is never a good thing, whether it happens via storm, broken pipe, sewage back up or shower that has been clogged. Your home must undergo a water extraction process as soon as possible, because the longer water remains, even more problems can arise.

  1. Airflow

This is the evaporation phase. After removing as much water as possible in its liquid state, the remaining moisture is evaporated with high velocity air movers.

  1. Dehumidification

This is the balanced phase. As moisture is dried out, it evaporates and becomes water vapor in the air. Without dehumidifier to remove moisture from the air, it could delay the drying process and cause mold growth.

  1. Temperature Control

This is also called the temperature maintenance phase. Our professionals will use room measurement, temperature and relative humidity to carefully monitor the progress.

HOW TO PREVENT WATER DAMAGE IN YOUR KITCHEN?

Your kitchen is one of the important rooms in the house. We spend so much time in there so we have to keep it dry and water damage free. Sometimes kitchens get damaged because of the water; that is why we have to inspect the source of the water to prevent the water damage. Taking simple preventative measures can go a long way to avoid water damage to your kitchen.

  1. Refrigerator

Just like checking the stove, you should also periodically check underneath your refrigerator for any signs of leaking. Inspecting this area will reduce the chance for water problems. Water behind the refrigerator is a sign. Fix or hire an appliance technician. If you detect mold growth, clean it immediately.

  1. Sink and Counter-top

Water can seep under the sink if caulk is worn and might be a cause of damaging the counter and cabinet. Check regularly under the sink and remove other stored items to search for leaks. A drip in the trap under the sink means drain problems and must be repaired fast. A dripping faucet must be repaired promptly.

  1. Dishwasher

Never leave the dishwasher running if you're going to leave the house. If the dishwasher malfunctions and causes flooding, you will be able to stop it before the damage becomes extensive. Problems usually occur when the drain line is clogged. Clean the drain line regularly. Look under the base of the dishwasher for leaks.

  1. Fats, oils and grease down your drain

Fats, Oils, and Grease can be found in abundance in the kitchen. You should never allow them to go down the drain. This is a common cause of sewer backups, which can lead to contaminated water damage. In order to prevent this from happening, you can collect them in a jar and put it directly in the trash.

Making a habit of inspecting the water-using rooms in your home is one of the simplest and most effective things you can do as a homeowner to prevent water damage.

GETTING RID OF MUSTY ODOR AFTER EXPERIENCING A WATER DAMAGE

After a water damage and you have taken care of all repairs, but still have a musty odor in your home. Flood damage can leave one hard to handle effect in the form of a stale, musty odor. The smells often indicate subtle remaining moisture from black water or even sewage loss that can lead to mold growth. The unpleasant odor caused by the water damage can last for weeks and even months after the initial incident. To properly deodorize your house, the affected area will need to be dried. Here are a few tips to get rid of musty smells.

  1. Fix the Source of the Musty Odor

The source of smell could be a water leak or moisture and condensation issues or a leak from an appliance. You have to address the source of the musty odor.  It is best to monitor the source of the problem to prevent this problem from happening again.

  1. Dry Out the Affected Area

Water damage can spread and affect other areas of your home. Make sure that every part of your home is completely dry.

  • Remove water-damaged items such as carpet, carpeting, and furniture. Treat the carpet with a cleaning solution. A homemade one involves mixing a cup of vinegar and two cups of warm water in a spray bottle. Spray it onto the carpet lightly, being sure not to oversaturate and trigger mold growth.
  • Inspect your home for other sources of moisture like kitchen, bathroom, and basement. These areas are prone to mold growth and can cause water damage odor.
  • Clean the air. Open door and windows to allow air circulation and to speed up the drying process, but, be sure that the weather outside is warm and dry. You may use air-moving fans and dehumidifiers to dry out your home
  1. Get Rid of Mold

Mold can damage the structure of your home through the development of bacteria. As the mold continues to colonize your home, the musty smell caused by water damage can grow more. To get rid of household mold, especially if it is seen in its early stages, you may scrub the affected area with warm/hot water and soap or spray it with white vinegar. PREVENTING COMMON TYPES OF WATER DAMAGE IN SUMMER

Water damage occurs year round. Many people do not realize that water damage can occur at any time of the year. Changing seasons make certain types of water damage more likely. Most homeowners who live in cold-weather climates know the risks of burst pipes during the winter. However, homeowners should also consider how to prevent water damage in their house during the summer. Here are some summer-related water damage issues to keep in mind:

garage PROTECT YOUR GARAGE FROM FLOODING Ventura, California

Flood is one of the most dangerous natural disasters. It can occur almost any time of the year. It happens when excessive water is collected in any area. It usually happens due to heavy rainfall. Some regions face flooding becomes more of a concern because of melting of snow and thunderstorm.  In other reason, when there is a dam that breaks down. Whatever the cause may be, it is equally dangerous. It has a lot of harmful consequences.

When excess water accumulates around your home, your garage is one of the first areas that can get flooded, possibly causing thousands of dollars in damage.

Here are a few tips to protect your garage from flooding:

  1. Enhance Your Drainage

When the street gutters and drains are overwhelmed with flood water, your home is vulnerable to flooding. It is important to have adequate drainage on your property.  Install French drains along your driveway that can transport excess water away from your home’s foundation.

  1. Check Your Foundation Around Your Driveway and Garage

Some cracks that provide a space for water to seep could make your home more vulnerable to flooding. Inspect your foundation for cracks and seal them with waterproof paint or a vinyl concrete patch. Call a professional if there is a larger crack.

  1. Replace Your Garage Door Weather-Stripping

Weather-stripping provides protection against water intrusion and helps maintain the temperature in your garage. The seal at the bottom of your garage door is enough to protect your garage against minor flooding.

  1. Install a Barrier in Front of Your Garage Door

Flood barriers around your property act as short dams that expand when in contact with water and help stop low-level flooding efficiently. Sandbags can direct water away from your home.

  1. Install flood vents

During a severe storm, the chance of flooding is increased and your garage door usually can’t withstand the force exerted by powerful floodwaters. Installing vents in your garage will make the draining process easier and faster in the unfortunate event that water does enter your garage.

Flooding in a garage is something we do not wish for but unfortunately, it can happen even when we prepare for the worst.

HARDWOOD FLOOR WATER DAMAGE

Hardwood flooring is a beautiful. Home owners prefer to have this floor at home. Unfortunately, this is prone to water damage.

Here are causes of hardwood floor water damage:

  1. Leaky roof spilling onto the floor
  2. High humidity in the home
  3. Spills that aren’t cleaned immediately
  4. Tracking rain or snow into your home
  5. Tracking swimming pool water into the home
  6. splashes from water

Any source of water can damage your floor. If you notice water on your floor, you should seek to clean it thoroughly. Otherwise, the hardwood will absorb the water.

There are many ways to protect your floor

  1. Take precautions to protect your floor from typical sources of water like a splash from the kitchen sink or wet boots coming in from the outdoors by placing absorbent mats where water is an issue. Use a silicone mat, or a silicone backed mat, to prevent soaking through.
  2. Place towels down temporarily when you expect water from a pool, rain, or another temporary source of water.
  3. If you have children who frequently spill, it might be wiser to have them eat away from the hardwood
  4. If the water stains are white spots on your flooring, they are simple to remove. Use your floor’s polish and rub the stain away gently with a soft cotton cloth.
  5. Dry the floor naturally and slowly with fans and plenty of airflow through the space. Open windows and doors (unless the outdoor air is more humid than the indoor air), and run fans to move air through the space.
  6. Laminate flooring. This material is highly vulnerable to water damage and swells when it gets soaked

If you have significant damage, or if you have a particularly valuable hardwood floor, it’s wise to work with a professional to get it repaired. A restoration company can help you replace boards that are perfectly matched with your existing floor. Call SERVPRO of Ventura at (805) 656-3911. We have a 24/7 Hotline.

TIPS TO AVOID WATER DAMAGE IN YOUR HOME

LEAKING WATER ON THE CEILING TIPS TO AVOID WATER DAMAGE IN YOUR HOME

Water damage is one of the problems of home owners. When it rains heavily or snow melts quickly, the risk of this type of damage increases. Water damage also increases the risk of mold growth, which is a very expensive problem to remediate. Water can cause thousands of dollars’ worth of damage by damaging properties. Too much water can lead to minor problems such as water in basement areas, or it can lead to the destruction of homes.

Here are tips to keep your home safe and well maintained.

  1. Disconnect hoses

Standing water in a hose may freeze back into the pipe. It is best to stop your water flow.

  1. Clean gutters and downspouts

Clean your gutters at least twice a year to avoid blockage and ice dams. Standing water can cause damage to your gutters and roof, and unmanaged overflow may create puddles.

  1. Know your water main: Know the location of your water main, and shut it off if you leave for an extended amount of time.
  2. Investigate leaks right away and fix.

If you ignore water damage, you significantly increase the likelihood for mold, mildew, dry rot, or even structural damage to your home.

  1. Check your water pressure

If the water pressure to your home is set too high, pipes and hoses may fail under the pressure. Buy a water pressure gauge at a local hardware store, attach it to an outside faucet, and turn the faucet to full force.

  1. Upgrade washing machine hoses

Old washing machine hoses are among the most frequent causes of water loss for homeowners.

  1. Install water detection devices

A water detector is a small electronic device that sounds an alarm when its sensor comes in contact with moisture.

Water damage may occur, even when precautions are taken. It is important to hire one of these water damage restoration companies as soon as possible after water damage occurs. If you need a local restoration company, Call SERVPRO of Ventura at (805) 656-3911. We have a 24/7 Hotline.

WATER HEATER FAILURE

WATER HEATER WATER HEATER

WATER HEATER FAILURE

It’s not easy to go without hot water especially when the seasons change and weather becomes cold.
Like other appliance in your house, water heaters fail. And that can lead to cold showers — or even
worse, a water leak. A burst water heater is a nightmare scenario for any homeowner.
Standard water heaters contain up to 40-120 gallons of water, so when one unexpectedly leaks or bursts
it can cause an immense amount of water damage. If pressure builds up in the tank you’ve essentially
got a ticking time bomb in your house waiting to explode.
Wondering why your water heater is failing? Here are some of the reasons – and what you can do help
prevent a failure:
1. Internal rust
They typically last several years, but it’s a good idea to check your anode rods every year – or bring in a
professional to take a look. If they look worn down, it’s time to replace them.
2. Sediment buildup
When water is heated, mineral deposits separate and settle onto the bottom of your water heater tank.
Flush your water heater at least once a year.
3. High water pressure
Water pressure that’s too high can damage your water heater, as well as your pipes and other
appliances. Keep the water pressure on your heater no higher than 80 psi, and consider replacing your
temperature and pressure (T&P) relief valve.
4. Corrosive fumes
Problems can occur if the air quality is poor. Especially dangerous is corrosive air, which can corrode
your tank and lead to water heater failure. Keep corrosive substances like ammonia and bleach far away
from your water heater.
5. Wrong size heater
Water heaters come in a variety of sizes to accommodate the water usage of all the people and
appliances in your home.
6. Old age
Water heaters typically last about 8 to 12 years. If your water heater is old, consider replacing it with a
newer, more energy-efficient mode
Don’t let an overflowing water heater turn your home into a water park. If you notice your water heater
is on the fritz, call water damage specialists immediately. Please call us SERVPRO of Ventura at (805)

directly to the main sewer lines. What happens if a clog occurs?

and comes out at the lowest point. The bubbling is due to air trapped in the plumbing system.
Sewage damage is a very serious problem especially when sewage water flows to your business property
or home. Sewage water has bacteria, viruses and fungi which makes it very harmful. It smells bad and it
causes discomfort and diseases. As such, it is important to have this water cleaned up properly and
immediately to prevent further damage to your property and its occupants.
How to Prevent a Backup

household. Avoiding an overflow won’t just save you money in home repairs, it will keep you free of
sickness caused by the leak.
1. Avoid throwing items down the drain that will not dissolve.
These are tissues, baby wipes, diapers and other hygiene products.
2. Watch out for cooking grease and your sink.
One the grease has become a solid it will cling to the sides of your pipes and begin trapping food residue
and other matter that finds its way down your drain, leading to a blocked sink.
3. Long hair can cause a drain to clog
Use a drain cover or clean out any hair gathered around your drain from the shower before it disappears
down the pipes!
4. Put paper towels in the trash

SHOULD CARPET BE REPLACED AFTER WATER DAMAGE

11/13/2019 (Permalink)

Wet Carpet Wet Carpet from Water Damage

When excess water is on your property and doesn’t get addressed immediately, building materials,
furnishings and other porous objects will absorb the water and become damaged in the process.
Sometimes, the damage can be easily dealt with, especially if there is a small amount of water that is
clean. But other times, the damage is more difficult to handle, because the water involved is heavily
contaminated.
Seeing your house after flooding is a devastating experience for any homeowner. After the incident
he/she must decide what personal items can be saved and which should be replaced. If there is carpet in
the house, an inch of water can be a reason to replace the carpet. There are reasons why it is best to
replace soaked carpet than to save it.
Where does flood water came from?
1. Flood water comes from broken water pump in the house.
2. Flood water comes from a source with contaminants such as overflowing toilet.
3. Flood water comes from contaminated source such as sewer.
The more contaminated the flood water, the more disinfecting an item must go through to be safe for
people to use. Carpet that has been soaked in the water more than 24 hours is at risk of developing
mold and mildew. It is very difficult to completely remove from carpet. There is no guarantee that the
carpet won’t develop mold or mildew even after it has been cleaned.
Carpet that has been soaked in the water needs to be disinfected, and dried completely to kill any
harmful micro-organisms before it is safe to use. The carpet pad should be replaced and the floor
beneath the carpet cleaned and allowed to dry completely before putting carpet back down.
The cost of trying to save carpet can be high, and the long-term health effects may not be acceptable.

-Check the Sump Pump

Sump pump is like your insurance policy, you don't think about it until you really need it. The sump pump starts working automatically during a flood to draw water out of your home and into the street drain system. Check this to make sure it's working; in case of power outage, make sure it operates on a standalone battery and that the inlet is clean.

-Check Ceilings and Walls for Signs of Leaks

Look for leaky pipes, make repairs before a small leak turns into a big one.

-Place Pans Underneath Appliances

Protect yourself by placing deep pans underneath appliances so they can capture any water from a leaky hose. Washing machine hoses, a ruptured or cracked dishwasher, AC can cause major water damage.

FOUR WAYS TO PREVENT BASEMENT LEAKS

Clean your gutters

Any leaves and debris left over from winter, then install leaf guards and downspout extenders to direct water 10 feet from the house.

Repair Cracks

If you have cracks in your basement that are allowing water to seep through, open them up. Seal it with hydraulic cement.

Tree Check

To protect your foundation, shade trees with aggressive roots, like silver maples, should be planted at least 20 feet from your house. Smaller species, keep them at 10 to 15 feet of clearance.

Check grading

Surrounding soil should be pitched away from the house at a slope of at least 1/4 inch per foot so that water drains toward your yard, not your foundation. Buy and add soil, raking it smooth, until the grade is highest at the house's perimeter.
