House with Lightning House with Lightning

Storms and hurricanes caused damage in different regions every year. Some of the biggest dangers caused by storms can occur after the storm has already passed. This violent weather is the primary cause of standing flood water which can cause a serious health risk. Standing water inside a house is hazardous in a number of ways. Here are some of the most severe problems floods can bring.

  1. Physical Hazards
  2. Electrocution is a major threat. Standing water may be electrically charged if the power is still on inside the house or even from a nearby downed power line. Never attempt to access the main electrical panel if it is located in a flooded or wet part of the house. The only way to ensure that a flooded house is safe is to disconnect all the power in the house and this could be done only by an electrician.
  3. Physical damage caused by a storm is still present in the water. Sharp objects underwater may exist, such as shards of broken glass or sharp metal which might be impossible to see before it causes injury.
  4. Various insects, animals and snakes may take refuge inside a flooded home. Mosquitoes also utilize stagnant water inside a house to lay eggs.
  5. Health Dangers
  6. Chemicals and other toxins picked up as a flood moves across the landscape are included in the indoor floodwater. Lead, arsenic and solvent as well as assorted pesticides could cause problems to your health.
  7. Foods and drinks that have been contaminated by standing flood water could cause problems to your health. Since floods typically flush out municipal sewage systems, E. coli bacteria, staphylococcus and even flesh-eating bacteria may also be present in the house.

Storms occur with little warning and can be especially devastating, so you’ll need the company that you can trust to rise to the occasion. If you need a local restoration company, Call SERVPRO of Ventura at (805) 656-3911. We have a 24/7 Hotline.

After a major storm, you will deal with wind and water damage to your house, which can be both difficult and dangerous. Dealing with a variety of damage must be handled properly to protect your safety and belongings. Here are some tips on managing your cleanup efforts and keeping your family safe.

When dealing with water damage after a storm, make sure that all power in the house is shut off. This is very important because storm water may have soaked into your walls and reached the electrical wiring. Water supplies should be shut off if you notice broken pipes to avoid using the sewage system.

As soon as you can safely approach your property, document damage to your home before clean up with photos or video, and compile a written list of damaged items. Make sure to take an inventory of both the interior and exterior of the property. Read your homeowner insurance policy thoroughly to see what is and isn’t covered before contacting the insurance company.

The hardest part after storms hit your house is when the roof is damaged. Water damage could add to the problem once the roof is lost.  Make sure to inspect and repair immediately so that the rest of the property is protected from future storms.

The amount of damage even a short storm can do is alarming. It is important to repair it quickly but the risk of danger is high. Before you try making repairs yourself, work with your home insurer and hire a fully licensed and bonded contractor with credentials. Cleaning up flooded property requires a professional technique to ensure that every corner is dry. If your property has set for a long period of time, it may also be necessary to do mold remediation. By keeping safety in mind and working with a professional, you will have your property looking as good as new soon.

If you're looking for storm restoration services, then contact the team at SERVPRO of Ventura. We are proud to serve the residents of Ventura. When serious disaster hits, we stand ready to mobilize our team to help out.

Water leaking from pipe DOES HOMEOWNER’S INSURANCE COVER WATER DAMAGE? Ventura, California

You already have insurance and you’re paying for it. But did you ever ask yourself if your homeowner’s insurance covers water damage? What’s covered and what’s not in your homeowner’s insurance policy?

Waking up to a flood due to faulty water heater is annoying especially after you realized your floor is damaged. Plumbing and leaking pipes can be a potential disaster, costing homeowners thousands of dollars. Water damage done to your home is covered by a standard homeowner’s insurance policy. However, not all types of water damage are covered. It’s not always easy to figure out when water damage is and isn’t covered by your policy because the distinctions are so fine, but this guide will inform you of the specific situations when your homeowner’s insurance will cover water damage.

When Does Homeowner’s Insurance Cover Water Damage?

Standard home insurance policies require water damage to be sudden and internal, with the requirement that the water has never touched the outside ground. It means that, if water damage occurs suddenly or accidentally from a source inside your home, such as a busted pipe, it will likely be covered by your homeowner’s insurance. If the water comes from outside your home, it will not be covered by your standard policy.

  • Plumbing: Burst pipes, frozen plumbing, faulty plumbing, accidental overflow
  • Water damage from extinguishing a fire
  • A leaking roof (coverage would extend only to the home interior, not the roof itself)
  • An accidental overflow of an appliance or fixture (toilet, washing machine, bathtub)
  • Mold (only when it’s the result of covered water damage)

What types of water damage not covered by homeowner’s insurance?

Water damage is not covered by insurance if the result is not accident or unexpected occurrence. Here are three instances in which your homeowner’s policy will not provide coverage:

  1. Maintenance problems that have not been attended to
  2. Repair or replacement of the actual source of the water damage.
  3. Flooding

Standard policies won’t cover water damage resulting from a flood, you’ll need to purchase additional flood insurance, especially if you are in area prone to flooding.

If your house floods due to a burst pipe, which happened suddenly and accidentally, that would be an exception, your homeowner’s insurance can cover the costs of water damage.

Does homeowner’s insurance cover water damage from rain?

Homeowners insurance covers water damage from rain sometimes, but not always. It all depends on how the damage occurred. For example, if a storm opens a hole in your roof, allowing water to leak in and destroy valuable personal property, your policy typically offers coverage. But when lack of maintenance results in water damage, you won’t be covered.

Every day the rooms in the house are infested with dust. Sometimes this can reduce the quality and appearance of your home. That why it is important to invest in a microfiber mop.

Microfiber is more efficient at cleaning out dust than any methods. It can reach into surface pores where the cotton mop becomes too deep for cleaning. Mops are the most popular uses of microfiber material. Here are the benefits of using a microfiber mop.

  1. Increases productivity

When using a microfiber mop, you do not have to wring out the mop or use some other solution. Just water alone will allow you to remove 99% of all dirt dust and germs from your floors. It is a low water mopping method because you only need a damp pad to deep clean any hard surface. Compare that to traditional method tat takes up to 40 minutes to an hour to clean an area.

  2. Reduces Worker Injury

Microfiber mops are designed to fit comfortably in a user's hand and weigh significantly less than conventional wet cotton loop mops. They are easier to use, microfiber mops are safer and prevent more injuries than traditional cleaning methods.

  1. Reduces Cross Contamination

Healthcare facilities have been using microfiber cleaning. This is to reduce cross contamination risk between patient rooms, some state laws require that maintenance personnel change out the mop and/or cleaning solution after every room.

  1. Reduced Chemical and Water Usage

Microfiber mops use about 10-20 times less liquid than standard cotton mops, helping water usage costs.  Very few microfiber applications require the use of chemicals.

  1. Cleaning Power

Microfiber cleans more effectively, reaching into surface pores and crevices, where cotton mop materials are too large for deep cleaning.

Microfiber cleaning is the most significant product innovation to the cleaning industry in the last century. It’s a quick and easy and help preserve environmental resources. In using microfiber material, you'll find that the key benefits extend beyond your workers' wellness. It helps protect the environment by reducing both your contribution to the waste stream and the use of water and harmful chemicals.

Due to global pandemic, many of us are forced to stay at home. This is to lessen the spread of coronavirus. Schools and other workplaces began to close down. Remaining inside is a good way to protect ourselves from the virus but it could also lead to a boredom and stir craziness.

Here are tips to help make your time quarantined interesting and even productive.

  1. Keep Learning

Having classes cancelled doesn’t mean we should stop from learning. There are thousands of great resources online in all possible fields to keep us busy. There are online courses available no matter what our interest is. Now is the perfect opportunity to expand your knowledge and gain new skills.

  1. Declutter and donate

Staying at home gives us more time to carefully look around to our belongings. Identify clothes and other things that are rarely used and clean up some space. There are people to have them for sure. Sort them and donate.

  1. Family time

Not all of us are fortunate to be always with their families. You can use the internet to connect with your loved ones when we are not with them. Staying at home is a great opportunity to catch up with family members and get some closure.

  1. Cook

A lot of us often turn to takeaway food due to a busy lifestyle of lack of time for cooking. Now, it’s the right time to learn to cook and spoil ourselves with homemade dishes.

  1. Keep moving

Life in the time of coronavirus can be scary and stressful, whether you are in quarantine or not. To fight the boredom, it’s time to turn ourselves to the mood-boosting power of dance. Dancing helps us fight toxic feelings of fear, anxiety and paranoia.

  1. Reflect

Having time for ourselves is a great opportunity to reflect on our personalities, identify our strengths and weaknesses to work with.

This time of crisis reminds us that we should unite, cooperate and be compassionate above anything else to solve the problem easily. Helping each other should be our priority in this kind of situation.

As coronavirus cases continue to climb up, some countries are putting their citizens on various forms of lockdown. To lessen the spread of the virus and flatten the curve, experts advised that even those who show no sign of illness should stay at home during this time of global pandemic.

Most of us will be spending more time at home, so make sure your house is as safe from fire risk as possible. Here are tips you need to consider while stuck inside during lockdown.

  1. Smoking and Vaping

Are there smokers living in your home? If people are spending more time in their home, they might find themselves smoking more often.

  • Check for near-misses you might not have spotted like burn marks on floors, clothing or bedding
  • Check that any matches or lighters are kept out of reach of children
  • Check that any e-liquids are out of reach of children
  1. Candles, incense and naked flames

Spending more time at home means relaxation, and you want to make your home cozy by using incense and scented candles.

  • Check that candles, incense and oil burners are held firmly in heat resistant holders
  • Check that these items are out of reach of children
  • Check that these items are kept away from materials that may catch fire, such as curtains, furnishings or clothes
  1. Electrics

More people are working from home, schools are closed, malls and tourist spots are shut down. Children at home are using tablets and game consoles for longer. One of the causes of fires are overloaded electrical outlets.

  • Check your workspace set up to ensure plugs aren’t overloaded
  • Check for any loose or dangerous wiring around your home
  • Check that your electrics are clean and in good working order
  • Throw out any chargers that either didn't come with the device or that are not genuine replacements
  1. Cooking

Restaurants are closed. Staying at home means more cooking at home. Children are at home, so you might have more distractions to deal with.

  • Check for scorched tea towels or worktops in the kitchen
  • Check your toaster isn't placed under kitchen cabinets or close to anything that can catch fire
  • Check that your oven, hob, cooker hood and grill are clean and in good working order
  • If you have a barbecue, make sure it stays outside, that it's positioned on level ground and kept well away from anything that may catch fire

lady with burning pan GREASE FIRE: WHAT TO DO AND HOW TO PREVENT THEM Ventura, California

A grease fire damage can be unexpected disaster for kitchen and home. Grease fires are difficult to extinguish. Putting water on grease fire or trying to snuff it out with towels can make it worse and can lead the fire to spreading.

Putting out grease fire requires skills, a speedy reaction, and most importantly the presence of mind.

Here are following steps on how to put out grease fire:

  1. Turn off the heat. One thing you should never do is to pick up the pan. Otherwise, the fire can spread to you or the grease could spill into the counter or kitchen floor, causing the fire to spread easily.

  3. If the fire is out of control, the most important thing to do is to call 911 and get everyone outside.
  4. Do NOT pour water on a grease fire. Putting water on grease can lead the fire to spreading.
  5. Do NOT fan the fire with a dry or wet cloth, it can make it worse and spread the fire.
  6. If the fire is too huge to handle, cease it using a fire extinguisher.

How to prevent a grease fire:

  1. Never leave your pot or frying pan unattended.
  2. Always keep a metal lid on the counter to cover burning pan or pot.
  3. Slowly heat the oil to your desired temperature.
  4. Turn off the burner if you suspect the grease is getting too hot.

Fire is fast, in less than seconds a small flame can turn into a major fire. In just two minutes, a fire can become life-threatening. Smoke and toxic gases kill more people.

House fires are more common, with potential fire starters like light bulbs, laptops, and lint traps hiding in plain sight throughout your home, disguised as harmless.

Some things we ignore can lead to incidence of house fires.

  1. Dirty Rags

A pile of oil – soaked rag when left unattended are very real fire hazard, as they could oxidize and spontaneously combust, causing a house fire.

  1. Electric Blanket

A warm and cozy electric blanket can comfort in the cold weather, but it also poses a potential fire hazard if used improperly. Extra covers over the blanket could buildup excessive heat and may lead to fire.

  1. Ignoring Appliance Recalls

In the last 10 years, home appliances caused an estimated 150,000 fires, and a significant number of these were caused by defective appliances. If you happen to own one of those, replace I immediately.

  1. Dryer Lint

Accumulation of loose threads and other tiny textile could lead to fire during excessive heat buildup. Clean the dryer vent and exhaust duct regularly, to clear away lint and clogs, and reduce the risk of fire.

  1. Overheated Laptops

Laptop is one electronic device we ignore a lot of time. When you leave it on your bed, couch, rug, or other soft, flammable surface, you run the risk of restricting airflow through the cooling vents, which can cause your laptop to overheat and possibly catch fire.

  1. Wrong light bulb wattage

Installing a light bulb with a wattage that is too high for a lamp or light fixture is a leading cause of electrical fires. Always check the light fixture’s maximum wattage, and never go over the recommended rating.

  1. Using Many Extension Cords

Connecting a large number of cords for a significant amount of time can cause an overload that leads to a short circuit and result in a fire. Hire a qualified electrician to install power outlets.

  1. Leaving Candles Unattended

Candles add ambiance and aroma to the house, but their soft glow can grow into a blaze if left to burn unsupervised. A draft could cause the flame to flare up and ignite nearby flammable items.

  1. Smoking Indoors

The embers of an improperly extinguished cigarette can interact with other nearby flammable items and start a fire. To avoid fire, only smoke outside, and be sure to pour water on cigarette ashes and butts before tossing them in the trash.

  1. Ignoring Loose-Fitting Plugs

A loose electrical outlet has the potential to ignite a fire behind the wall. If you notice any loose electrical outlets in your home, make sure they’re replaced immediately.

While it is impossible to completely prevent fire, be sure to always have the phone number of a fire damage restoration company on hand. Please call us SERVPRO of Ventura at (805) 656-3911.

Removing water is just the first step in drying water damage. It can take days or even weeks to dry walls, carpets and other materials. Trapped moisture within a wall cavity can lead to the growth of bacteria. Microbial growth will occur if allowed to remain wet for extended periods of time from your home. To let the trapped moisture escape, you should open windows and doors and it would be wise to use a dehumidifier to reduce the moisture content of the air and help things dry more quickly, especially in closed areas.

A dehumidifier is an electrical appliance which reduces and maintains the level of humidity in the air, usually for health or comfort reasons, or to eliminate musty odors and to prevent the growth of mildew by extracting water from the air. It can be used for household, commercial, or industrial applications.

Here are several reasons why a humidifier is important:

  1. Mold Prevention

Every homeowner's mold is a nightmare. Moist, damp air is the ideal environment for mold and a dehumidifier can remove the moisture while preventing new mold from growing.

  1. Improve Air Quality

The quality of air in your home is not only measured in the amount of toxins that you may or may not be breathing in, but also by the humidity levels of the air itself. A dehumidifier cleanses the air of harmful substances and plays an important role in improving your indoor air quality.

  1. Protects Your Home

High humidity levels can destroy your home structure. Moisture can affect the wood in your home, including the support beams, causing them to crack or split. Mold can grow in the wall. Metal fittings may start to rust. Flood is one of the most dangerous natural disasters. It can occur almost any time of the year. It happens when excessive water is collected in any area. It usually happens due to heavy rainfall. Some regions face flooding becomes more of a concern because of melting of snow and thunderstorm.  In other reason, when there is a dam that breaks down. Whatever the cause may be, it is equally dangerous. It has a lot of harmful consequences.

When excess water accumulates around your home, your garage is one of the first areas that can get flooded, possibly causing thousands of dollars in damage.

Here are a few tips to protect your garage from flooding:

  1. Enhance Your Drainage

When the street gutters and drains are overwhelmed with flood water, your home is vulnerable to flooding. It is important to have adequate drainage on your property.  Install French drains along your driveway that can transport excess water away from your home’s foundation.

  1. Check Your Foundation Around Your Driveway and Garage

Some cracks that provide a space for water to seep could make your home more vulnerable to flooding. Inspect your foundation for cracks and seal them with waterproof paint or a vinyl concrete patch. Call a professional if there is a larger crack.

  1. Replace Your Garage Door Weather-Stripping

Weather-stripping provides protection against water intrusion and helps maintain the temperature in your garage. The seal at the bottom of your garage door is enough to protect your garage against minor flooding.

  1. Install a Barrier in Front of Your Garage Door

Flood barriers around your property act as short dams that expand when in contact with water and help stop low-level flooding efficiently. Sandbags can direct water away from your home.

  1. Install flood vents

During a severe storm, the chance of flooding is increased and your garage door usually can’t withstand the force exerted by powerful floodwaters. Installing vents in your garage will make the draining process easier and faster in the unfortunate event that water does enter your garage.

Flooding in a garage is something we do not wish for but unfortunately, it can happen even when we prepare for the worst.

Don’t Forget to Talk to a Professional

Talk to a professional about more ways you can flood-proof your home. If you need a local restoration company that will protect your home and garage, Call SERVPRO of Ventura at (805) 656-3911. We have a 24/7 Hotline.

Beautiful Home Beautiful Home Ventura, California

Hardwood flooring is a beautiful. Home owners prefer to have this floor at home. Unfortunately, this is prone to water damage.

Here are causes of hardwood floor water damage:

  1. Leaky roof spilling onto the floor
  2. High humidity in the home
  3. Spills that aren’t cleaned immediately
  4. Tracking rain or snow into your home
  5. Tracking swimming pool water into the home
  6. splashes from water

Any source of water can damage your floor. If you notice water on your floor, you should seek to clean it thoroughly. Otherwise, the hardwood will absorb the water.

There are many ways to protect your floor

  1. Take precautions to protect your floor from typical sources of water like a splash from the kitchen sink or wet boots coming in from the outdoors by placing absorbent mats where water is an issue. Use a silicone mat, or a silicone backed mat, to prevent soaking through.
  2. Place towels down temporarily when you expect water from a pool, rain, or another temporary source of water.
  3. If you have children who frequently spill, it might be wiser to have them eat away from the hardwood
  4. If the water stains are white spots on your flooring, they are simple to remove. Use your floor’s polish and rub the stain away gently with a soft cotton cloth.
  5. Dry the floor naturally and slowly with fans and plenty of airflow through the space. Open windows and doors (unless the outdoor air is more humid than the indoor air), and run fans to move air through the space.
  6. Laminate flooring. This material is highly vulnerable to water damage and swells when it gets soaked

If you have significant damage, or if you have a particularly valuable hardwood floor, it’s wise to work with a professional to get it repaired. A restoration company can help you replace boards that are perfectly matched with your existing floor. Call SERVPRO of Ventura at (805) 656-3911. We have a 24/7 Hotline.

Water damage is one of the problems of home owners. When it rains heavily or snow melts quickly, the risk of this type of damage increases. Water damage also increases the risk of mold growth, which is a very expensive problem to remediate. Water can cause thousands of dollars’ worth of damage by damaging properties. Too much water can lead to minor problems such as water in basement areas, or it can lead to the destruction of homes.

Here are tips to keep your home safe and well maintained.

  1. Disconnect hoses

Standing water in a hose may freeze back into the pipe. It is best to stop your water flow.

  1. Clean gutters and downspouts

Clean your gutters at least twice a year to avoid blockage and ice dams. Standing water can cause damage to your gutters and roof, and unmanaged overflow may create puddles.

  1. Know your water main: Know the location of your water main, and shut it off if you leave for an extended amount of time.
  2. Investigate leaks right away and fix.

If you ignore water damage, you significantly increase the likelihood for mold, mildew, dry rot, or even structural damage to your home.

  1. Check your water pressure

If the water pressure to your home is set too high, pipes and hoses may fail under the pressure. Buy a water pressure gauge at a local hardware store, attach it to an outside faucet, and turn the faucet to full force.

  1. Upgrade washing machine hoses

Old washing machine hoses are among the most frequent causes of water loss for homeowners.

  1. Install water detection devices

A water detector is a small electronic device that sounds an alarm when its sensor comes in contact with moisture.

Water damage may occur, even when precautions are taken. It is important to hire one of these water damage restoration companies as soon as possible after water damage occurs. If you need a local restoration company, Call SERVPRO of Ventura at (805) 656-3911. We have a 24/7 Hotline.

Spring weather is unpredictable. The risk of injury and death increases when severe weather hits. Prepare for storms, floods, and tornadoes for you know in advance they are coming.

Spring is the time of year when weather changes. Temperatures can swing back and forth between balmy and frigid. Thunderstorms cause most of the severe spring weather. They can bring lightning, tornadoes, and flooding. Whenever warm, moist air collides with cool, dry air, thunderstorms can occur.

Advance planning for thunderstorms, lightning, tornadoes, and floods requires specific safety precautions. You can follow many of the same steps that you would for all extreme weather events.

  1. Evaluate the exterior

Your home is designed to shelter you from the weather. To keep it in tip-top condition, do regular walk-a rounds and inspect for weaknesses. Keep an eye out for the following things:

  • Loose shingles that look rippled or ones that have already fallen to the ground.
  • Check the siding to see if it’s firmly in place.
  • Tree branches extending over your house or dead branches that could fall in a storm.
  • Note loose patio furniture and décor that should be secured or pulled inside when a storm comes.
  • Gutters should be firmly attached and all downspouts need to be in place.
  • Check to see if your fence needs repair.
  1. Clean gutters and downspouts

Gutter cleaning should be part of your spring and fall home maintenance routine. This proactive habit keeps water run-off away from your home and helps prevent flooding. It also gives you the opportunity to inspect your rain gutters for leaks and sagging.

  1. Check your sump pump.

Rain will cause risk of flooding. If you have a sump pump, it’s a great idea to run through an annual sump pump maintenance list.

  1. Inspect leaks

If you’ve had leaks in the past, it’s best to take care of them now before more damage to prevent flooding.

Storms occur with little warning and can be especially devastating, so you’ll need the company that you can trust to rise to the occasion. If you need a local restoration company, Call SERVPRO of Ventura at (805) 656-3911. We have a 24/7 Hotline.

A wet and dry vacuum cleaner is used to clean up spillages and wet debris, as well as dry dust and dirt. The waste is sucked into a bucket system rather than a bag then separates the liquids from the solids into separate chambers, making suitable for indoor and outdoor use.

Having a wet-dry vacuum in your house is a very good replacement to mop. Since it can suck up water, a wet vacuum can be used to clean up water spills and minor flooded areas.

Here are the advantages of using of using a wet and dry vacuum cleaner:

  1. Dispose of Liquids

You do not need to lift any heavy tanks to remove the collected materials or spills because these vacuums are equipped with easy to use disposal units. The drain hoses that are attached allow disposal of liquid and collected debris can be removed by lifting the lid of the collector.

  1. Power

Wet-dry vacuums have very powerful lifting and suction capabilities. It is very efficient and effective against the removal of both liquid and dust particles. Since they come with a separate tub or collector that contains fixed motors, wet-dry vacuums, have easy storage facilities for the collected liquids or debris.

  1. Versatility

It can be used for right about any cleaning task: it can pick up small to large amounts of debris; clean up wet spills; inflate mattresses and pool toys; retrieve items from a sink or unclog a pipe; it can clean out your fireplace or wood stove and remove snow from pathways. It is a powerful tool that can replace many traditional tool like air pumps, mops, brooms and spades.

  1. Size

Wet dry vacuums come in a very good range of sizes varying between the 1/2 to 15-gallon capacity and with up to a 3 stage motor capacity.

  1. Affordable

Modern handheld wet and dry vacuum cleaners are more affordable than the traditional cleaners used for commercial purposes. They also tend to be more economical than regular cleaners as they provide additional benefits for the same price.

It’s not easy to go without hot water especially when the seasons change and weather becomes cold.
Like other appliance in your house, water heaters fail. And that can lead to cold showers — or even
worse, a water leak. A burst water heater is a nightmare scenario for any homeowner.
Standard water heaters contain up to 40-120 gallons of water, so when one unexpectedly leaks or bursts
it can cause an immense amount of water damage. If pressure builds up in the tank you’ve essentially
got a ticking time bomb in your house waiting to explode.
Wondering why your water heater is failing? Here are some of the reasons – and what you can do help
prevent a failure:
1. Internal rust
They typically last several years, but it’s a good idea to check your anode rods every year – or bring in a
professional to take a look. If they look worn down, it’s time to replace them.
2. Sediment buildup
When water is heated, mineral deposits separate and settle onto the bottom of your water heater tank.
Flush your water heater at least once a year.
3. High water pressure
Water pressure that’s too high can damage your water heater, as well as your pipes and other
appliances. Keep the water pressure on your heater no higher than 80 psi, and consider replacing your
temperature and pressure (T&P) relief valve.
4. Corrosive fumes
Problems can occur if the air quality is poor. Especially dangerous is corrosive air, which can corrode
your tank and lead to water heater failure. Keep corrosive substances like ammonia and bleach far away
from your water heater.
5. Wrong size heater
Water heaters come in a variety of sizes to accommodate the water usage of all the people and
appliances in your home.
6. Old age
Water heaters typically last about 8 to 12 years. If your water heater is old, consider replacing it with a
newer, more energy-efficient mode
Don’t let an overflowing water heater turn your home into a water park. If you notice your water heater
is on the fritz, call water damage specialists immediately. Please call us SERVPRO of Ventura at (805)

Spring break is approaching, giving us a little taste of what summer will have in store for us. With only a
couple more months left, we are becoming more and more anxious towards the day where we could
finally enjoy more of those outdoor activities.
We truly cannot wait to say goodbye to winter and hello to summer. However, like winter, there are a
number of risks that are associated with house fires during this time of year. While we should not be too
worried about these occurring on our property, we will always be aware that accidents can still happen
during the spring and summer season.
Here are tips for preventing traditional fires within your home.
1. Outdoor Electrical Outlets
Keep in mind not to overload the circuit outlets to use outside machinery and equipment; you will want
to keep the watt usage at or below 1500. The temperatures outside are warmer. If it is warm or too hot
to touch, be sure to turn unplug them for at least 15 minutes between each use. This ensures that it will
not become overheated or cause a property fire.
2. Fuel Containers
Be sure to throw away gas or paint cans that have a leak immediately. If there is any gas or other
flammable material on your yard, be sure to have it removed or cleaned right away, especially during
hotter temperatures.
3. Grilling
As sparks can fly or flames can shoot out when using too much fuel, always take proper precautions. Not
only can this cause severe property damage, it can also cause serious injuries.
4. Dryers
The biggest issue in the spring and summer time, however, is that it may be used more often during this
time of year.
5. Inspect the Fire Extinguisher
Be sure that it is in working condition and everyone knows its location. Taking a few minutes now to
make sure it works can save you weeks in repair time in the future.
6. Lightning
As thunderstorms are no stranger during the springtime, lightning is one of the most common causes of
property fires. While it is impossible to completely prevent lightning from striking a chimney or roof of a
home, be sure to always have the phone number of a fire damage restoration company on hand.

What is a fire blanket?
A fire blanket is a highly flame-resistant blanket that can be used to extinguish a small fire or to wrap
around a person in case of a fire. Fire blankets are made from 2 layers of woven glass fibre fabric and an
inner layer of fire retardant film. They work by cutting off the oxygen supply to the fire.
They smother small fires by not allowing any oxygen in to fuel the flames. Due to its simplicity, a fire
blanket may be more helpful for someone who is inexperienced with fire extinguishers.
All fires start with a small fire and a fast action could avoid a catastrophe. Thus, here are reasons why
we recommend having a fire blanket.
1. It is an active protection system against fire of easy and fast action.
2. It is effective before any type of fire (Class A, B, C, D, F/K).
3. It is effective to block heat and act as a barrier when escaping a fire; just cover with the fire blanket
and run to a safe place.
4. People whose clothes are firing could be covered with it and stop the flames, saving their life in this
5. It is easy use. It could be used by everyone, including people with limited physical capacities.
6. They are economic and only need to be placed in a visible and easy access place.
7. It is versatile; they could be used in professional sectors as well as domestic use (industrial kitchens,
laboratories, oil centres, domestic kitchens, cars, caravans…)
8. It does not require any maintenance. Just replace it when used.
9. In the case of frying pans or fryers burning, it is the safest system to stop fires caused by oil. Just cover
the frying pan or fryer with a fire blanket and let the fire die.
10. There are more organisations that recommend it as a complement of security systems against fire
including it in their manuals of Security Systems and Risk Prevention basing in Real Decreto 2267/2004,
among others.

Smoke detectors and heat detectors are both used to detect fires. When one of these sensors is paired
with an alarm system, it will send an alert to the panel when activated. This will cause an alarm event on
the system. This will cause all sounders and sirens to activate to alert everyone.
The difference between smoke detectors and heat detectors is how they activate. A smoke detector is
activating when senses smoke, typically as an indicator of fire. Commercial security devices issue a signal
to a fire alarm control panel as part of a fire alarm system, while household smoke detectors, also
known as smoke alarms, generally issue a local audible or visual alarm from the detector itself or several
detectors if there are multiple smoke detectors interlinked.
The heat detector is an instrument that warns of fire when the temperature around the smoke detector
reaches a certain level. But heat detectors do not detect smoke. On the other hand, a smoke detector
warns of fire when it comes across combustion or soot products in the atmosphere.
Smoke detectors will give off the alarm even when a small amount of smoke is detected. On the other
hand, heat detectors will not detect even the slightest amounts of a temperature change.
Smoke detectors generally fall into one of two categories. These are photoelectric smoke detectors and
ionization smoke detectors. A photoelectric smoke detector works by using a small internal light. When
smoke enters the chamber, the light will refract. The disruption of the internal light tells the sensor to
activate and alert the system.
Heat detectors also fall into two main categories. There are fixed heat detectors and rate-of-rise heat
detectors. Fixed heat detectors respond upon detecting an extremely high temperature that would only
be present with a fire. Meanwhile, rate-of-rise heat detectors respond when the temperature rises
unusually fast, such as 10 degrees Fahrenheit in a single minute.
Smoke detector and heat detector have two different uses, they are both used as they do well when
installed together in buildings.
1. A Heat detector is an instrument that warns of fire when the temperature around the smoke detector
reaches some level. Smoke detector warns of fire when it comes across combustion or soot products in
the atmosphere.
2. The smoke detectors use ionization and photoelectric technologies whereas heat detector uses
thermocouple and electro-pneumatic technologies.
3. Smoke detectors will give off the alarm even when a small amount of smoke is detected. On the other
hand, heat detectors will not detect even the smallest amount of temperature change.
4. Smoke detectors are very sensitive and may give off false alarms. On the contrary, heat detectors are
more reliable fire detectors, even in dusty environments and only sets off the alarm when the temperature is really high.

Flood Protection: Tips to Keep Your Home Safe in a Storm

Toy plastic house on the sand washes wave Flood Protection: Tips to Keep Your Home Safe in a Storm

Climate hazards are natural events in weather cycles. We’ve always had hurricanes, droughts and wildfires, flooding and high winds. We witnessed a scale of destruction and devastation that is terrifying.

As a property owner, it’s up to you to take every possible precaution against harsh weather. Ensuring your home can withstand flooding and storm damage will help cut down the risk of loss and the need for costly repairs.

Protecting your home will provide peace of mind that your family is safe during a severe storm.

Here are tips for maintaining home flood protection.

  1. Keep Your Foundation in Good Shape

If your foundation is already damaged, over time water will cause more erosion and make the problem worse. This is a serious problem if you have a basement, as this is the first place that will flood if water enters via the foundation.

  1. Have Your Roof Inspected

If your roof is in bad shape, flooding or severe water damage is inevitable. A weak roof won’t stand up to high winds.

  1. Ensure Your Landscaping Provides Proper Drainage

Adding some soil around the foundation in order to create grading will help. However, you may need to have a landscaper install a drainage system. This will ensure water can’t damage your foundation or enter your home during heavy rains.

  1. Install a Backflow Valve

In areas prone to heavy flooding, there’s always a possibility of sewage backing up into your home.

Valves work by automatically closing when flooding occurs and water starts backing up. Water and waste are then directed back out of your home instead of in.

  1. Use a Sump Pump for Your Basement

If you have a basement, investing in a sump pump is a smart idea. This device will pump water out of your basement when it starts to flood.

  1. Make Sure Doors and Windows Are Sealed

If you’re dealing with leaky windows or doors, ultimately you’ll need to have the frames replaced altogether.

Your home is an investment, so it makes sense you’d want to protect it from serious flood damage.

If your home has suffered from flood damage or experiencing water damage emergencies, please call us

Restoration professionals clean and deodorize the items within your home. Cleaning and restoring carpets, specialty rugs, and upholstered furniture an personal contents is their main goal, to restore as much as possible. They also take care of smoke and ash damage. any frayed, kinked or worn light strands.
2. Never overload a circuit. A typical household circuit can power 70 strings of 50-bulb mini lights, or 300
to 600 strings of 50-bulb LED lights.
3. Turn off all lights and decorations before leaving the house or going to bed. To avoid braving the cold
every night, install a timer to automatically turn on the lights at dusk and turn them back off at dawn.
4. Use a GFCI. A ground-fault circuit interrupter is a special type of wall outlet installed in areas where
water and electricity could potentially mix, causing a dangerous reaction.
Candles may provide a festive ambiance and delightful fragrance, but they’re also responsible for
starting two out of every five home decoration structure fires each year.
1. Get flame without the fire. Consider replacing traditional candles with flameless, battery-operated
types, but don't;t forget to turn them off when leaving the house as LED lights do get hot.
2. Don't leave the room. Never leave a candle burning unattended and, if you're going to be stepping
away from the candle for several minutes, it's safer to blow it out rather than risk a potential hazard.
3. Use caution when decorating with candles. Always use a sturdy candle holder to keep it from tipping
over or touching flammable surfaces.
1. When setting up a tree at home, place it away from fireplaces and radiators. Because heated rooms
dry live trees out rapidly, be sure to keep the stand filled with water. Place the tree out of the way of
foot traffic and do not block doorways.
2. When purchasing an artificial tree, look for the label "Fire Resistant. “Although this label does not
mean the tree won't catch fire, it does indicate the tree will resist burning and should extinguish quickly.
Keep the fireplace clear and free of debris. Clean the ashes from the fireplace after each fire. To reduce
the amount of flammable material collecting in the chimney, burn only CSIA-accepted manufactured
logs or firewood that’s been seasoned a year or more.

Thanksgiving Day. The holiday season is a busy time for all. As the winter months approach the risk of
fires increases. Kitchen is the most important place of the home, especially during the holidays.
Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires, more than two times as many home-cooking fires
occur than on any other typical day. Keep yourself and your family safe this Thanksgiving with these
safety tips.
1. Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a
short period of time, turn off the stove.
2. Check the stove regularly if you're simmering, roasting, boiling, or baking.
3. Remain at home while you are cooking, use a timer to remind you that you’re cooking.
4. Keep things that can catch on fire - like oven mitts, towels, paper or plastic - away from you stove top.
5. Avoid wearing loose-fitting clothes while in the kitchen.
6. Always have a lid that fits your pot or a flat pan to quickly smother out a fire.
7. Never use a glass casserole or lid on the stove or burner, as it may explode from the heat.
8. Missing or dead batteries are the main reasons smoke alarms do not sound in response to a fire.
9. In case of an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed to prevent flames from spreading.
10. After a fire your stove and oven should be checked or serviced before using again.
11. Keep children at least 3 feet away from a hot stove.
12. Keep matches and lighters out of reach of children.
13. Make sure you have working smoke alarms, test them by pushing the test button.
14. Keep a fire extinguisher handy in the kitchen, and know how to use it.
15. After the party, walk around the home and ensure candles and fireplaces are extinguished,
unnecessary appliances are turned off, and no potential hazards (leftovers, sharp/flammable objects)
are in reach of your kids or pets.
Thanksgiving is the peak day for home-cooking fires. Cooking equipment was the leading cause of home
fires and fire injuries. Always make sure your holiday is safe and happy.

Wet Carpet Wet Carpet from Water Damage

When excess water is on your property and doesn’t get addressed immediately, building materials,
furnishings and other porous objects will absorb the water and become damaged in the process.
Sometimes, the damage can be easily dealt with, especially if there is a small amount of water that is
clean. But other times, the damage is more difficult to handle, because the water involved is heavily
Seeing your house after flooding is a devastating experience for any homeowner. After the incident
he/she must decide what personal items can be saved and which should be replaced. If there is carpet in
the house, an inch of water can be a reason to replace the carpet. There are reasons why it is best to
replace soaked carpet than to save it.
Where does flood water came from?
1. Flood water comes from broken water pump in the house.
2. Flood water comes from a source with contaminants such as overflowing toilet.
3. Flood water comes from contaminated source such as sewer.
The more contaminated the flood water, the more disinfecting an item must go through to be safe for
people to use. Carpet that has been soaked in the water more than 24 hours is at risk of developing
mold and mildew. It is very difficult to completely remove from carpet. There is no guarantee that the
carpet won’t develop mold or mildew even after it has been cleaned.
Carpet that has been soaked in the water needs to be disinfected, and dried completely to kill any
harmful micro-organisms before it is safe to use. The carpet pad should be replaced and the floor
beneath the carpet cleaned and allowed to dry completely before putting carpet back down.
The cost of trying to save carpet can be high, and the long-term health effects may not be acceptable.

A wildfire erupted overnight in the hills above communities in Southern California's Ventura
County, forcing evacuations for thousands of people. 2019 wildfire season is the current-running fire
season in California. According to California Fire Data California has been almost 160, 000 burned than
last year. The Maria Fire ignited in the dry brush in Ventura County early Thursday evening and quickly
consumed thousands of acres, illuminating the contours of South Mountain in a smoky orange glow by
Power utilities have preemptively shut off power to over one million residents due to perceived risk of
wildfires starting in high winds due to high-voltage power lines. While large areas have been without
power for days, people in fire danger areas had trouble getting updates and critical life support
equipment would not work without backup power.
Thousands of children and elderly are rushed to the hospital with asthma attacks and respiratory illness
because of the smoke from the growing blazes leading to hazardous air quality throughout Southern
California. The blazes were among the many wildfires to explode in California during a period of
dangerous fire conditions. Those fires have burned more than 101,000 acres in three weeks.
Californians are becoming more accustomed to the impacts of a longer, stronger fire season due to
global heating, but they are also becoming exhausted. 10 million Southern Californians now living under
a massive smoke cloud to stay indoors with their windows and doors closed. This smoke hazard will last
for two-and-a-half weeks as the fire burns and the smoke lingers.
Weather conditions still may pose a problem, but they are improving. Red flag warnings — meaning
wind, humidity and other conditions are ripe for fires — have been extended for parts of Southern

David Sapsis, a wildfire scientist. More likely in the near future given what scientists know about how
climate change will increase wildfire risk in California.
Climate models show that as temperatures continue to rise, the atmosphere and land in some regions,
like California’s forests, will grow more arid. This in turn will make shrubs and trees drier and more

What is an air scrubber? How does it work?

Most of us think that we are protected from air pollution if we are inside the house. But sadly, that is
not true. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), indoor environments are around 2-5
times as polluted as the air outdoors.
When the temperatures drop and we spend more time indoors and the quality of our indoor air
becomes more important to our health and well-being. If you have a forced air system in your home,
there are many different modifications you can make to your existing HVAC system to improve the
quality of the air you breathe.
What is air scrubber?
Air scrubber is a portable filtration system that removes particles, gasses, and/or chemicals from the air
within a given area. These machines draw air in from the surrounding environment and pass it through a
series of filters to remove contaminants.
How does it work?
Air Scrubbers are used by mold remediation specialists, renovation companies, and other job sites to
help improve the surrounding air quality. It doesn’t just treat the air but it also helps to clean the
surfaces of your home, such as countertops, bathrooms, kitchens, and doorknobs.
Air filters can trap pollutants, but only air purification systems such as Air Scrubbers actually kill the
contaminants and pathogens in your home.
Air Scrubber Benefits & Common Applications
1.Purifies the air and reduces particles that can irritate allergies and asthma
2. Protects people from dangerous contaminants and pollutants
3. Protects heating and cooling systems from dust buildup
4. Reduces exposure to common bacteria and viruses
5. Protects against allergy and asthma triggering contaminants and respiratory issues which may lead to
health problems
6. Effective against MRSA, E. coli and other illness causing bacteria and viruses

Tips to Prevent House Fires

9/10/2019 (Permalink)

A home is a place where you make memories that’s why it is scary to imagine your home ever suffering
from a disaster such as a fire.
Here are ways to reduce the risk of house fire
1. Inspect All Your Heating Sources
When your heating sources are not properly working they could trigger a fire to happen. You should
have them checked out annually by a professional. Make sure your air filters are always cleaned out. A
fire can easily start from debris and dust being too close to a heat source so make sure you clean them
2. Test Your Smoke Alarms Regularly
The easiest way to avoid a house fire is by checking your smoke alarms regularly. There is a little button
on it that you can press to test it. If it beeps weakly, then you need to change the batteries. If a fire
breaks out and it’s not working, tragedy can quickly occur as no one is alerted to evacuate.
3. Don’t Leave Your Kitchen
A few seconds is all it takes for a fire to break out. Do not to leave cooking food unattended. If for
whatever reason you can’t turn off the oven, call someone into the kitchen to watch the food until you
get back.
4. Keep Your Stove and Oven Clean
Food particles aren’t the only thing that could cause this to happen. If your curtains hang a little too
close to the stove, they can catch fire. If you leave a dish towel or cookbook on a burner that you forgot
was still hot, they can catch fire.
5. Always Check Your Dryer
Depending on what type of dryer you have, they need to be inspected on a yearly basis. We all get in a
hurry when we’re doing our chores but, don’t forget to clean out your lint trap every time you put in a
new load of laundry.
6. Maintain All Cords
Before you plug something in, make sure that the cord hasn’t been chewed. If you do notice damaged
wires, replace them as soon as possible because this is a huge fire hazard. .

7. Properly Store Flammable Products
Household cleaners and common cosmetic items like hairspray and shaving cream can be hazardous. If
they are exposed to a large heat source, they can combust. Keep them away from space heaters, and
store them safely in a cool area.
8. Practice Caution with Candles
Scented can cause fire if you don’t use them carefully. Make sure you put them out before you exit a
room and keep them far away from blankets or other objects.
9. Be Careful with Your Fireplace
You don’t want any stray sparks to escape so you need to make sure you have a door between the
flames and your flooring. It goes without saying, but never leaves the room when the fireplace is going.
Dispose of them in a metal container that is designated just for the ashes.
10. Keep Fire Extinguishers Around
Fire extinguishers are your best defense weapon when a fire breaks out. Make sure you have one in
every room that is a potential threat, such as the kitchen. Every family member should know how to use
an extinguisher so if a fire does happen, it can be put out as fast as possible.

Basement water leaks are an alarming problem.  Inspectors estimate that 60% of homeowners in the country have basement water problems. Even newly constructed homes are still prone to leaks.

When it rains, it pours. Especially if you have water or moisture problems at home, learning how to deal with nasty, smelly leaked water in your basement is one of the best ways to protect your home and prevent costly damage in the future.

Causes of Water Problems in the basement

  1. Flood.

Needless to say, basements are prone to flooding since they are the lowest part of a house. If you live in a flood-prone area, one of the best things you can do to protect your property is to apply some flood control methods, such as raising your home on stilts, installing foundation vents or a sump pump, applying coatings and sealants on your basement walls, and installing check valves on your pipes.

2 .Water Seepage

Water can seep through cracks in your walls as well as other porous materials. There are two types of wall cracks – horizontal and vertical. The former is more serious as it is caused by pressure against the walls. If you see stains on your basement walls or floors whenever it rains, it’s an indication of water seepage.

3.Window Well

Windows allow light and air into your basement. However, during heavy rains, water can collect within the window wells.

  1. Mold growth

It only takes 24 to 48 hours for mold to invade your basement, damaging various surfaces like walls, floors, and furniture. Mold does not only cause rotting of surfaces, especially wood, but it also puts your family at a greater risk of health problems, such as allergy and asthma.

  1. Damaged wiring and appliances

Water that seeps through cracks on the walls can damage electrical appliances in your basements, such as your washer, dryer, water heater, and furnace. Electrical problems can also cause life-threatening accidents to anyone in your family.

There are some things you can do on your own to prevent the need for water damage in basement repair like using air dryers, installing fans, insulating pipes and walls, and keeping water away from the foundation. Doing these things will free you from high basement water damage repair costs. It’s always best to call restoration professionals especially if there is already some serious damage.

Experiencing a water damage disaster is enough stress on its own. Always seek for professional advice for water damage. If you experience these kinds of emergencies, call SERVPRO of Ventura at (805) 656-3911.

Carpet Cleaning – Do It Yourself vs. Hiring a Pro

Carpet Cleaning – Do It Yourself vs. Hiring a Pro SERVPRO of Ventura

Carpet Cleaning – Do It Yourself vs. Hiring a Pro

Carpet has long been treasured as a warm and comfortable floor; it adds beauty to living spaces. It also acts as a magnet for dirt, stains and dust mites. Vacuum helps prevent dust, pet hair and grit from settling deep into carpet. Most carpets benefit from annual cleaning to remove the abrasive debris that vacuuming cannot reach.

There are several reasons to choose professional carpet cleaning over do-it-yourself.

  1. Thoroughness

Steam cleaning, or hot water extraction, cleans carpets thoroughly by injecting hot water into carpet fibers. The process loosens dirt and kills bacteria and dust mites. Water and dirt are immediately drawn back into the machine, leaving little moisture in the carpet and shortening drying time. Special tools work to remove stubborn stains safely and effectively.

Homeowners may purchase or rent carpet cleaners, but the machines leave a substantial amount of moisture in the carpet. Homeowners who lack the training of carpet-cleaning professionals may actually make stains worse by using cleaning methods unsuited for the stain.

  1. Difficulty

Intensive cleaning requires a great deal of bending, kneeling and lifting of heavy equipment. Attempts to clean all portions of the carpet, including hard-to-reach areas, with the same thoroughness as a professional can be exhausting.

  1. Cost

Homeowners choose to clean their carpets themselves to save money, but do-it-yourself carpet cleaning carries hidden costs. Homeowners must also pay for cleaning supplies.  The cost of a carpet-cleaning machine can run into hundreds of dollars, while renting a machine requires an annual cash payout.

Do-it-yourself carpet cleaning also carries the potential for expenses related to permanent carpet damage. Over-wetting the carpet can result in mold and mildew growth

Professionals match cleaning methods to the type of carpet being treated, protecting the homeowner’s investment in the process.

Even the highest-quality carpet can show soiling over time. Protect your investment by calling us to clean and maintain your carpet.. The SERVPRO System offers a number of cleaning options to match any type of carpet.

Earthquake is the shaking of the Earth’s surface resulting from the sudden release of energy in the lithosphere that creates seismic waves. It  range in size from  weak that they cannot be felt to those violent enough to toss people around and destroy whole cities. When the epicenter of a large earthquake is located offshore, the seabed may be displaced and cause tsunami. Earthquakes can also trigger landslides, and volcanic activity. The energy of a magnitude 4 earthquake is 31 times the energy of a magnitude 3 earthquake. The energy of a magnitude 5 earthquake is 31 times the energy of a magnitude 4 earthquake.

Things to Do Before an Earthquake

  1. Make sure you have a fire extinguisher, first aid kit, a battery-powered radio, a flashlight, and extra batteries at home.
  2. Learn first aid.
  3. Learn how to turn off the gas, water, and electricity.
  4. Make up a plan of where to meet your family after an earthquake.
  5. Don't leave heavy objects on shelves (they'll fall during a quake).
  6. Anchor heavy furniture, cupboards, and appliances to the walls or floor.
  7. Learn the earthquake plan at your school or workplace.

Things to Do During an Earthquake

  1. Stay calm! If you're indoors, stay inside. If you're outside, stay outside.
  2. If you're indoors, stand against a wall near the center of the building, stand in a doorway, or crawl under heavy furniture (a desk or table). Stay away from windows and outside doors.
  3. If you're outdoors, stay in the open away from power lines or anything that might fall. Stay away from buildings (stuff might fall off the building or the building could fall on you).
  4. Don't use matches, candles, or any flame. Broken gas lines and fire don't mix.
  5. If you're in a car, stop the car and stay inside the car until the earthquake stops.
  6. Don't use elevators (they'll probably get stuck anyway).

Things to Do After an Earthquake

  1. Check yourself and others for injuries.
  2. Check water, gas, and electric lines for damage. Turn on the radio. Don't use the phone unless it's an emergency.
  3. Stay out of damaged buildings.
  4. Be careful around broken glass and debris. Wear boots or sturdy shoes to keep from cutting your feet.
  5. Be careful of chimneys (they may fall on you).
  6. Stay away from beaches. Tsunamis sometimes hit after the ground has stopped shaking.
  7. Stay away from damaged areas.
  8. If you're at school or work, follow the emergency plan or the instructions of the person in charge.
  9. Expect aftershocks.

It is important to think about what you will do to protect yourself, wherever you are, when the earth begins to shake.

Property Damage - What To Do After a Storm

1/25/2019 (Permalink)

Putting aside intentional vandalism, a big storm is your most likely concern when it comes to acquiring property damage. A good storm can leave your roof in disrepair, your windows shattered and your siding was lying by the side of the house. If you have insurance, the monetary cost should be covered, but that doesn't necessarily mean you'll get a roadmap to repair. The insurance company's idea what should cover the cost may also differ substantially from reality. A lot of homeowners look around in confusion and frustration after incurring this kind of destruction. If you're among them, here are some things you can do.

Your Options

If you're having trouble coming up with the funds to pay a professional, you'll have to do the cleanup on your own. Don't depend on your insurance company to come through with the funds in time. If there are issues with water, for instance, you need to start getting it out immediately. Every hour it sits in your home, the worse the property damage becomes. If it stays long enough, you may not be left with anything salvageable. Plenty of people have faced this very reality. If you can afford to hire a professional restoration company, do so.  It's money well spent.

Shop Around

Once you've taken care of any storm problems, it's time to start talking restoration and rebuilding. If you're looking at a fence in disrepair, it could be project you can tackle on your own. Anything more substantial, you'll need to shop for a good contractor. This is a dangerous time for homeowners. When a storm blows through town, shady contractors are never more than a step behind. Make policy to hire only established and reputable contractors, and you'll be able to avoid scams.

Exercise Caution

This isn't a time where your kids need to be outside playing in the yard without shoes. Storm-caused property damage can lead to host of dangers, many of which may be invisible until it's too late. Stray nails, for instance, could be anywhere. This may be true at all times, but it is especially important to remember following an event such as this. It's already a burden to recover from such incident. Don't make it worse by adding a medical emergency on top of it. Exercise caution until everything is cleaned up.

When it comes to companies that repair, you should know that reliability and professionalism are key.

Don't Leave Your Disaster Recovery Plan 'Til After the Disaster

1/24/2019 (Permalink)

Disaster recovery planning is one of those things that your IT Department usually worries about just after you've had flood that takes our your datacenter. As the water rises and the electrical circuits start to trips out, the boss will call down and shout something about "calling the disaster recovery team" to get everything back on track ASAP.

This is usually when you remind him that he didn't sign the proposal. The water will carry on rising and the computers will carry on fizzling out, and the data on them will eventually be erased. As the remaining IT team wave goodbye to the boss who failed to sign the proposal, they then sit down with the new boss and hatch a plan, plan to make sure that if everything goes wrong, they can get it all back and run again.

Of course, you don't have to go overboard with DR, it can be as simple as making sure you've got backups, but even those need to be cared for. So, just in case I've worried you enough for you to think that maybe you ought to be protecting your data somehow, according to SERVPRO of Ventura, here are a ways you can make sure you're properly covered and won't suffer a massive data loss when the ceiling falls in.

Take Regular Backups

This sound obvious, and to many, but so many people take a bunch of backups and then pop the tapes in the cupboard next to the server room or pop them in a safe in the accountant's office.

What happens if the building is flattened? How do you handle it when you come to restore from the tapes, and you realized that although you have a fire-proof safe, it's not very heat proof. Melted tapes don't work well in the new tape drive. Neither do melted CD's.

Backups should be taken off-site ideally, SERVPRO of Ventura will do this for you. They turn up in a secure van and take your tapes to a secure off-site storage center, and when the worst happens, you give them a call.

There is no excuse for not having a disaster recovery plan and if you find yourself trying to justify the expense, ask yourself how much it would cost if your entire data infrastructure were to be lost?

The Importance and Purpose of Mold Remediation

1/24/2019 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation

Mold remediation is the removal as well as cleanup of mold present in indoor environments. It is very important to tackle your mold problem head-on before it starts to cause damage to your home and health.

Causes of Mold

Many building materials can sustain the growth of mold. It is mainly caused by the presence of moisture or water indoors and grows on organic materials. Organic materials consists of things that were once living. Most mold growth is found on wood floors or wooded studs. It can also be encouraged by a lack of drying of building materials like concrete. Leaky roofs, flooding, problems connected with plumbing, and building maintenance can result in the growth of mold indoors.

The first thing to do to solve mold problems indoors is to stop the source of the moisture within your home or office, followed by mold removal. Solutions for small instances of mold are the following:

  • Ventilation
  • Sunlight
  • Wall Insulation
  • Dehumidifiers
  • Non-porous building materials
  • Household Cleansers

If the mold growth is significantly high, it might be necessary to choose a professional mold remediation company to eliminate mold from every building material which has been compromised.

The aim of remediation is to clean or entirely remove all contaminated materials in such a way that is effectively checks the release of fungi-contaminated dust from spreading into unaffected areas.

Some ways to hinder mold growth are air conditioning, improved insulation, and also dry fog. Current technology allows mold remediation companies to pack a room with a kind of dry fog that exterminates mold and prevents its growth. This fog contains a chemical which is approved by the EPA and in no way damages or harms the health of animals or individuals. The idea is to attack the mold which is harmful to people and their pets, whatever it takes as long as it does not exacerbate the situation.

However, some companies use other methods of remediating by exposing it to high levels of heat, sunlight, UV light, Ozone, Dry air, and also by spraying fungicides. While such methods can make it non-viable, the mold, including any by-products might still produce harmful health effects and repercussions. The only correct tactic of remediation is to employ detergent solutions that eliminate the mold physically.

Other means of Mold Removal Are:

  • Dry ice blasting: gets rids of mold on wood and cement surfaces
  • Vacuum: removes accumulated water from carpets and floors.
  • Damp wipe: by scrubbing or wiping non-porous surfaces with water and detergent.
  • HVPA Vacuum: Vacuum cleaners equipped with HVPA or High-Efficiency Particulate Air Filters are meant for the final cleanup of affected areas.

After remediation is achieved, all mold-affected furnishings, as well as building materials should be put in closed containers or impervious bags and disposed of as conventional construction waste

A Word of Caution

While engaged in mold removal, do not, on any account, breathe in either the mold or its spores, since it can be highly damaging to your health.

When it comes to come remediation, you should consider the service of SERVPRO of Ventura. For more information, visit www.SERVPROventura.com or call us (805) 656-3911.

Cleaning Your Floors and Walls After Fire Damage

1/24/2019 (Permalink)

Fire damage restoration can be both times consuming and difficult, which makes it a good idea to use a professional when it comes to fire restoration. However, if you want to do it yourself, here are a few tips that can help. First of all, you will need to clean your carpets and floors. For carpets, be sure you read the manufacturer instructions if you have them since some carpets can shrink if they are shampooed.

If you have the option to take the carpet out, then it is often a good idea to clean the carpets outside using a high-pressured hose to rinse off all of the dirt and soot. Next, using a sponge and a commercial rug shampoo, scrub the carpets working in two feet areas at a time. If the soot in the carpet is deep, use a brush with stiff bristles. Rinse the carpet well with water, using the least amount of water you can, since the water will gradually weaken the carpet backing.

Once the carpet is finally clean, you will need to thoroughly dry out the carpet immediately to prevent damage to the carpet. If you have hardwood floors, you may have to strip and refinish them if the damage was pervasive. If you have tiled floors, it is likely that the fire did not damage them at all that you won't have to do anything. Your only concern is that if the home was wet down to stop the fire, the water could have leaked into the sub flooring if there was cracked grout or missing tiles.

Next, you will find that smoke and soot are incredibly pervasive, and soot will have probably covered most of the walls, staining it in spots. Smoke restoration for walls can be very simple if the damage is not bad. IF the walls were painted with a satin or semi-gloss paint, then the smoke probably did not seep farther into the wall than the paint. So you should be able to scrub the water to get rid of the discoloration caused by the smoke. The easiest way to do this is to buy trisodium phosphate cleaner at a hardware store. Mix a tablespoon of the TSP with a gallon of warm watere, and use it to scrub the soot off. If the damage is worse, you may have to re-paint to get rid of the stains.

Nine Ways to Prevent Mold Growth

10/17/2018 (Permalink)

Ways to Prevent Mold Growth

Yes, mold can be good or can be a problem.

Mold can grow anywhere; can spread easily and cannot be completely eradicated. It is a problem that’s difficult and costly to fix, but it can also produce allergens and irritants that may compromise your health.

Here are ways to curb moisture indoors and the mold that thrives on it.

Do an audit of your home - where are the problem areas? Flood in the basement? condensation on an upstairs window? Water stain on the ceiling from a persistent leak? Identify problem areas in your home and correct them. Prevent mold from growing or spreading. Whatever the case, it is better to address the problem now. It might cost some money up front, but it will surely cost more down the road if it’s left unchecked.

Proper ventilation. It may be that your routine domestic activities are encouraging the growth of mold in your home. Make sure any domestic activities you do as simple as cooking dinner, taking a shower, or doing a load of laundry doesn't invite mold by providing proper ventilation in any high-moisture area. Clothes dryers, stoves — vent appliances that produce moisture to the outside. Open a window when cooking or washing dishes or showering or run an exhaust fan.

Dry wet areas immediately, mold can't grow without moisture. Seepage into the basement after a heavy rainfall, accumulation from a leaky pipe, a spill on the carpet should be dried within 24 to 48 hours. If you experienced a flood, remove water-damaged carpets, bedding, and furniture if they can't be completely dried.

Monitor humidity indoors. Indoor humidity as EPA recommends should be kept between 30 and 60 percent. Humidity can be measured with a moisture meter purchased from your local hardware store. High humidity can also be detected by simply paying attention to potential problem areas in your home. If you notice condensation, dry the surface immediately and address the source of moisture.

Equip your home with mold-resistant products. Whether you’re building or renovating a new home, use mold-resistant products like mold-resistant drywall and mold inhibitors for paints.

Direct water away from your home. The ground should be sloped away from the foundation, water may collect there and seep into your crawlspace or basement if it’s not sufficiently sloped away.

Clean or repair roof gutters. Regularly clean your roof gutters and get it inspected for damage. Repair them as necessary and keep an eye out for water stains after storms that may indicate a leak.

Improving the air flow in your home. According to the EPA, as temperatures drop, the air can hold less moisture. Excess moisture may appear on your walls, windows and floors without good air flow. Increase circulation, let fresh air in to reduce moisture and keep mold at bay.

Educate yourself. Knowing what works for your climate and your home is an important first step.

What is storm damage?

Building insurance policies do not necessarily define what a storm is, we say that a storm generally involves violent winds, usually accompanied by rain, hail or snow. However, there can be circumstances where storm damage is caused to property without high winds occurring.

What to do if I think my property has storm damage?

Call a trust-worthy and reputable contractor who will work with your insurance company to make sure you are treated fairly.

Is storm damage covered by homeowners’ insurance?

Homeowners insurance may help cover certain causes of storm damage, including wind, hail and lightning. However, damage caused by flood and earthquakes typically is not covered by a standard homeowners’ insurance policy. Check your policy.

Can storm damage impact the value of my home?

If you plan to sell your home in the future, yes. It is critical to address storm damage issues immediately. Many homeowners are shocked to learn they have costly storm damage to fix, years after the time to file an insurance claim has expired.

What is a storm chaser?

Storm chasers are companies that complete home repairs (common repairs include roofing and siding), and typically solicit business from homeowners after large natural disasters occur, such as hailstorms, hurricanes and tornadoes. If a major storm damages your house, make sure you’ve hired a trustworthy general contractor for home repairs. Then you want to begin the restoration process as soon as possible.

One of the benefits to choosing professional restoration through our SERVPRO team is that we have your interest at heart. From the first assessment of the damage to the completion of the restoration project, we're not satisfied with our work unless you tell us.

Seven Homeowner Tips for Water Prevention

10/17/2018 (Permalink)

-Keep an Eye on Your Water Bill

A water bill spike can be the only indicator you see that alerts you to the existence of a leak. Check places under slab or walls where they often and not always obvious to occur.

-Shut off Water to the House

Do you know where you’re your water shut off valve is? Find and check where it is located. You will be able to stop the water more quickly by knowing where your water shut off, preventing any further damages.

-Know Your Shutoff Valves

It is recommended that you and everyone in your household knows where the water shutoff valves are. That includes the main valve to the house, as well as all the appliance and single fixture valves. Test that the valves work, so you're not left with a broken valve during a leak.

-Clean and Repair Gutters

A Clean gutter diverts away rain water from your home, have it cleaned regularly and repair them as needed. Why? Because if the water flow is blocked by debris, it will start to overflow and can make its way into the walls and the ceiling. It's an easy water damage prevention step that takes just a few hours but can save you thousands of dollars.

-Check the Sump Pump

Sump pump is like your insurance policy, you don't think about it until you really need it. The sump pump starts working automatically during a flood to draw water out of your home and into the street drain system. Check this to make sure it's working; in case of power outage, make sure it operates on a standalone battery and that the inlet is clean.

-Check Ceilings and Walls for Signs of Leaks

Look for leaky pipes, make repairs before a small leak turns into a big one.

-Place Pans Underneath Appliances

Protect yourself by placing deep pans underneath appliances so they can capture any water from a leaky hose. Washing machine hoses, a ruptured or cracked dishwasher, AC can cause major water damage.

Winter Time: Protecting Pipes Before

10/17/2018 (Permalink)

We all know that water expands when it freezes; unfortunately, your pipes don't. When water freezes and expands, it puts pressure on whatever contains it, and with enough pressure, your frozen pipes will burst, causing a very costly water damage in your home. Here are ways to protect pipes in freezing weather.

  • Protect your pipes before the temperatures dip below freezing to save yourself from water damage. Especially important to remember if you're planning to leave your home for an extended period during the winter. An unattended home is a dangerous situation if you don't take the appropriate steps to winterize the house leaving.
  • If you're leaving home for more than a few days, you should drain your pipes of water. Draining is done through your main water supply. This prevents any water in the tube from freezing and backing up into the tap and then your pipes.
  • Wrap heating tapes around your pipes.
  • Ensure adequate insulation in common problem areas of the home, including attics, basements, and crawlspaces that contain pipes. Adding insulation to your home also reduces your heating bill. You can also add insulation to your pipes. It isn’t enough to prevent pipes from freezing but it will slow the transfer rate of heat to cold. Wrap the pipes in foam rubber insulation, or you can even use a ¼ inch layer of newspaper in areas that are less exposed to the cold.

- Foods that contains wheat grow mold which is black when exposed.

- There are also allergen molds. They are the green molds, not poisonous but allergen to humans. Both black and green mold can trigger sneezing fits, and the affected person may have itchy red eyes when they've inhaled or touched the mold.  They have devastating effects on asthmatic individuals.

- Orange and Yellow molds that rarely grow indoors are non-toxic. They tend to grow on decaying organic matter and wood.

- Pathogenic mold can cause diseases, especially to the respiratory system, for persons with weakened immune systems or newborn babies.

- Toxic Mold: Toxic mold, most commonly referred to as black mold, is poisonous when inhaled or touched, and has been linked to cancer in some cases.

Here are some basement flooding first tips that can help you evaluate the situation and make the best decision on the next step in the cleanup process.

Don’t panic. Try to determine where the water came from to know the best course of action.

Wait until the rain or storm stops before starting on extraction. There's no sense in removing water if more it is still being flooded. When you enter the basement, make sure to turn off any power or gas in the area and wear protective gears like gloves and boots and use caution when moving around the room.

There's a chance of slipping or tripping and dangerous objections under the water. Take extra care.

If it's winter, a pipe might have frozen and burst. If it is, quickly shut off the water to stop the flood.

Floor drains need to be cleaned regularly. Remove the grate on the floor drain and use gloves to remove any clog. Then thoroughly clean the drain.

You can use a sump pump or pool pump if available, a wet/dry vacuum, or a mop and bucket for smaller floods. If the flood is overwhelming, call in professionals for help.

No proper attic ventilation or attic insulation. During winter months, warm, moist air enters our attics from the living space below and clashes against the cool roof decking and framing, resulting in condensation or even interior frost in attic. This repeated and sustained wetting of the wood encourages attic mold growth. Attic ventilation systems help control the attic moisture, temperature and humidity by exhausting the moist air, eliminating the potential for condensation or frost in attic.

Improper mechanical ventilation. Dryer vents, plumbing vents, kitchen vents and bathroom vents should always be exhausted to the exterior of the building. These vents should be exhausted properly to prevent any moist air deposits in the attic, humidity level rising and mold growth.

When addressing attic mold issue, the source must be addressed to provide a long-term solution. The key to eliminating attic mold is controlling the moisture in attic. Have a professional help diagnose your attic moisture and attic mold issues by properly recommending and implementing an attic ventilation system or other corrective measures.

Clean your gutters

Any leaves and debris left over from winter, then install leaf guards and downspout extenders to direct water 10 feet from the house.

Repair Cracks

If you have cracks in your basement that are allowing water to seep through, open them up. Seal it with hydraulic cement.

Tree Check

To protect your foundation, shade trees with aggressive roots, like silver maples, should be planted at least 20 feet from your house. Smaller species, keep them at 10 to 15 feet of clearance.

Check grading

Surrounding soil should be pitched away from the house at a slope of at least 1/4 inch per foot so that water drains toward your yard, not your foundation. Buy and add soil, raking it smooth, until the grade is highest at the house's perimeter.

Find certified professionals. The water damage restoration industry is completely unregulated. It’s easy to start a business like this. If the company you’re looking for has certifications through a certification institution, then you know that they are professionals and will do their job the best they can. Their certifications indicate that they have the most up-to-date training, knowledge, and tools to assist you.

Offers wide range of services. A company that offers a wide range of water restoration services preferable compared to a company that doesn’t offer as many services. This is the easiest way to determine general expertise.

Do your diligence. Get recommendations. Speak to friends and family to see if they have had any experience with the companies you are looking at. Do not pick a company because they’re offering cheap service. Remember, you get what you pay for. Also, don’t let insurance companies who will suggest water restoration companies pressure you into using a sub-par company just because they said so.

Are they open 24 hours a day? Scammers and con-artists are not going to be willing to be awake at all hours of the night. Also look for companies that are willing to begin work as quickly as possible. Don’t let water damage sit for too long, it gets worse.

One of the benefits to choosing professional restoration through our SERVPRO team is that we have your interest at heart. From the first assessment of the damage to the completion of the restoration project, we're not satisfied with our work unless you are as well. Does Your Ventura County Home Have A Mold Problem?

5/2/2018 (Permalink)

In Ventura County, mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
